You only get tailwinds in France this time of year. In Merckx’ time the wind was a lot different.

What I wrote was nonsense anyway, because I looked at the average speed delevelopement not the stage winnres pace lol. Tired, stupid me.

You point is still pure trolling because it got nothing to do with how hard that Tour was given they'll race it at almost 43km/h in speed at the end. Now that I finally read that stat right lol.

Coppi would have averaged 50kmh on his own on a modern Bianchi.
Seriously I’m not saying it’s a slow tour but not the hardest tour for Pog by any means, his only real rival hasn’t been able to do anything to him at all. Even last year Jonas outsprinted him on one stage.

I completely agree.
This is not the Hardest Tour in Pog's career.
Far from it.

I don't pay much attention to Pog's interviews - 'How he's tired and exhausted etc..'
He is trying to be more likeable and not be crucified by the media.
His conservative riding in the last week is not caused by fatigue but by other factors that I won't bother talking about.
@snipeheem - the reasons for his riding in the last week are other, mate

Him alone against the peloton riding the Tour solo? Come on, this just makes zero sens as an argument, even less so then claiming the wind was different and that's why they ride super fast now. Or was it, and of course that could be, that the gods were mad at the Cannibal back in the days, and ALWAYS send him strong head and crosswinds to punish him for his audacity? So that the direction of the route woudln't even matter?

No it's actually the fastest Tour ever. And it's not that it got no climbing in it either. Plus: he crashed and was a bit sick, that doesn't make the race easier for him either.

Sorry, it’s only a joke about the wind, of course it’s the same now.

I’m sorry to hear some members don’t like the posts and regard as trolling.
It’s in a good hearted way I assure you, and only to counter such ludicrous claims as Merckx raced against nobody, is ‘embarrassing’ to compare him to Pogacar etc.
To me that is trolling and expect bit more respect to Merckx from the cycling forum? The best bloody cycling forum on the planet no less. Maybe the jokes go to far for some so sorry about that.
Please look at results , at the moment you can see someone like Bobet is more comparable to Pogacar, but I can leave this there.
Anyway, I hope there can be a bit more balanced discussion and respect to all the riders past and present, with no outlandish claims. I go now to eat an omeltte for my lunch and cheer Tadej in to the top 25 of all time with his win.

“His sulking, his grumbling, his general bad mood for several days has been clouding and disrupting the atmosphere at the end of the Tour de France,” wrote Alexandre Roos. “Because how can we be enthusiastic if the Yellow Jersey himself gives the impression of being bored, of living a painful experience, of sulking when he has achieved an exceptional race, four stage victories, and total mastery?”

He's tired from being sick and from the crash, not from winning.

Domestique has a grudge against Pogacar. One of his collaborators has the 2023 Amstel car on his X profile because, according to him, they gifted him the victory 🤣. He's always criticizing him, and when Visma dominated the 2022 Tour or the 2024 Vuelta, they weren't so critical.

All these accounts are very pro-Visma, like LR

And how many riders from the same country?
There were at least 5 different countries in the top ten on all of Merckx tour wins, it’s not like it was dominated by one country.
What’s your point ?
It’s a bit more global now, but I don’t think that means there’s better competition necessarily.
There’s one Spaniard within two hours of Pogacar, there was always a spanish rider in the top ten around Mercx times.
Indurain was Spanish, he won 5 times.
If you’re wondering why that’s relevant or means anything, well it probably doesn’t.

Nexy year, there is a chance Vingegaard races Giro-Tour so Pogacar can win Tour-Vuelta without much difficulty
Like every year eh.
There have been three non European winners in the whole of tdf history, where are all these dominant American and Australian tour winners pushing Pogacar ?
Its a bit more global now but saying there’s a few more Colombians in the peloton does not = this era being harder than Merckx.

We have Colombians, Americans, Australians in the top ten or even winning the tour since the 80’s.
Ask a non cycling fan who Pogacar is you get a blank face.
Armstrong was a household name in the 2000’s.
That might have been true before the Netflix special, but since then he's more well known.
I have had friends who barely knew any rider outside of Armstrong, talking about the Pogacar vs Vingegaard rivalry.

I would say it's harder to win it now.
Your opposition is made of full time professionals now and not part-time welders and postmen.
It’s an interesting discussion.
I wonder if Pogacar would be held in higher or lower esteem without Vingegaard?
Nobody would be anywhere near him , even with no welders or postmen in the peloton. It’d almost be a farce.
Despite all the sports science, budgets, doctors, physios, nutrition, there’s only been two riders in contention for years now.
If this era had only one Vingegaard or Pogacar it wouldn’t be seen as harder than last eras, probably seen as weaker.
