Team Sky’s budget for 2017 was £34,496,000, up 11% on the previous year as the screengrab from their filed accounts shows. It was equivalent to US$46.2 million or €38.6 million.

Again that’s for the year ending 2017, once the calendar year is done the accounts for Tour Racing Limited, the corporate entity better known as Team Sky are prepared and this time they were signed off in June. The team used to filed the accounts during July but now they’re posted just ahead of the statutory deadline of September (helpfully avoiding budget talk during the Tour?)
...
One note in the account mentions a provision for £2.8 million. This means they’ve set aside this money expecting “economic outflow to be probable”, a fancy way of saying they might have to cough up this money. This might be a small footnote in the accounts and a technical accounting matter but as a lump of cold hard cash it’s still significant.
...
Team Sky’s budget for 2017 was £34.5 million, their highest amount and by extension the biggest ever seen in the World Tour. This reflects an increased wage bill. 2018 should be bigger and it’s likely 2019 will be even bigger as they’ve just re-signed Geraint Thomas on a huge contract and according to The Cycling Podcast they want to give Egan Bernal a five year deal worth millions, quite possibly the biggest and longest contract to date in pro cycling.

There’s been a lot of talk about team budgets, caps and more. Yet there’s no hard data for the World Tour meaning a public debate built on guestimates. The UCI does get each team audited but the findings are kept very private. Sky are one of the rare teams to publish a full set of accounts (Ag2r La Mondiale do to), it’s a legal requirement in the UK. Keep an eye on the stockmarket takeover of Sky which could change the title sponsorship in the years to come.

I wonder if that £2.8 million has anything to do with Dawg's "problem" at the 2017 Vuelta.

Not unless they saw the future! The provision for £2.8m was made in Dec 2016 so most likely a provision to pay predicted rider and staff bonuses.

They're good Sky! ;) Seriously, reading the fine print it was money from Fox/Sky in 2016's accounting that is still sitting in Sky Cycling's coffers.

Apparently they shelled out a 13.5 million Euro 5 year contract with Bernal, which amounts to 2.7 mill a year.
I wonder how much that leaves in the SKY coffers for Egan's good friend Ivan?
It would be great to see them racing together as they mature into Super Stars!
It would be better if they raced against each other, fighting it out in the biggest races.

In the future, right now any aspiring gc riders could do a lot worse than learning the ropes at sky.

Saturday's the day to decide Sky's future -
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ecided-in-one-day-auction?srnd=premium-europe
The drawn-out battle for control of Sky Plc will come to a head in an one-day auction this Saturday, in a showdown to help seal the fate of Europe’s biggest satellite broadcaster.

Britain’s Takeover Panel will start the auction with bidders 21st Century Fox Inc. and Comcast Corp. at 5 p.m. on Sept. 21 in London and end the process during Saturday evening, it said in a statement. The auction will consist of a maximum of three rounds which will all take place on Saturday. Sky shares traded down 0.2 percent at 15.77 pounds at 10:02 a.m.

5 year contracts are rather unusual. procyclingstats.com have Bernal signed up for 2020, but longer than that ??

I think his original contract was until 2020. Sky was in a hurry to give him an extension.

with the 21st Century Fox Inc. and Comcast Corp situation, will Team SKY last as long as 5 years ?

Better chance with Comcast than Disney, although I could see Stark International lining up at the Tour in the next few years.

Dumoulin extended until 2022 after winning the Giro last year.
If I recall correctly also van der Poel signed for five years recently.

Unusual yes...but if you have a young rider who needs nurturing and developing, you can understand why a team would want to tie him down to an unusually long contract to make sure hes still around to ride for them during his peak years...

Revolutionary? No.

Common sense? Yes. If you have the confidence in the longevity of your resources to do it...
