Good to see Virenque setting the record straight on Wiggo.... he needs more panache!

-
“If Wiggins wants to be adored by the French public, I would advise him to be more aggressive, like a Thomas Voeckler, a Sylvain Chavanel, a Thibaut Pinot or a Pierre Rolland knows how to do,” he said. “And also to speak more French so the public can appreciate him.

“Yes, I am surprised and somewhat disappointed by such remarks but…”

Virenque...what a great example you use there, drug fulled panache at its best lol:rolleyes:

You are obviously not English, if you were you would realise that being adored by the French public is not high on the list. He actually speaks very good French and generally happily uses it.

Perhaps not, but those are the exact same reasons I don't like the guy, and I am English.

So am I! These July Tour posters are a crack up. They'll be gone in about 10 days.

Virenque is a total §*@!&# and should crawl into a hole. To clear up any misconceptions, he is not universally liked.

Now I have that off my mind, even though I don't appreciate Wiggins at all he does speak excellent French and generally makes an effort to do so. In fact his French could be considered by some to be better than that of Virenque who is often lampooned for his mangling of the French language.

I am a July Tour poster. I bought my first road bike Oct 2011. I am a three-time regional BMX champ(means nothing, just want to say i can handle a bike) I have watched the pro road scene for many a year and i am increasingly fascinated by this beautiful sport with all its faults and imperfections...i am not going anywhere else soon, only arrived here when seen someone on Guardian forum saying CN forums were full of disgusting disgraceful individuals, instantly piqued my interest! I know very little but i am learning fast. I have found my home.

Gianni Savio (hardly a paragon of virtue but they're you are) Sept 2010 : "The next physiological marvel might currently be stirring in Spain,Denmark,Venezuela or Great Britain, but, wherever he is,its not a system or an aerodynamic bike or a brilliant manager that will make him a Tour champion. Lets see whether the miracle-workers and dream peddlers of Team Sky agree"

That sort of dig against smug arrogant egotists like Wiggins/Brailsford will not be allowed to pass. That's why we are where we are in this Tour.

We like to hear that. We all started being more than July fans at some point. Watch the Vuelta, Worlds, etc... Theres still many amazing races to come. What we were talking about is the people who have no clue what happens in the cycling world other than what they see by Phil & Paul. So they are sorta clueless

Apologies to anyone I haven't responded to.... been out riding and this thread moves so fast!

Seems there has been some brief discussion in the power output thread, but not sure if this been posted in here yet (as it relates to and discusses Wiggins and Froome)....

The Tour in the mountains: Analysis & discussion
The Tour hits the mountains: Power output thoughts

snip

Obviously, you can infer from these numbers what the implications are for the top 5 on the day, and you'll see that they're not too different. You're predicting physiology that says that the world's best cyclists have a VO2max of 85 to 87 ml/kg/min, that they're 23% efficient, and riding at 90% of maximum. Or, they could be 24% efficient with a VO2max of 81 ml/kg/min. That is, on paper, normal physiology for the best cyclists in the world in peak condition.

The "abnormal" physiology of years gone by came from guys who were sustaining 6.4W/kg for 45 minutes. That points to a human that has a VO2max of 97 ml/kg/min on the bike, or an efficiency of 28%, or can sustain 95% of max for 45 min at the end of five hours of racing. That just doesn't happen.

Now before anyone starts accusing me of being a Wiggins fan, I'm an aussie and I want Cadel to win, so if I have any bias, it is towards him.

LMFAO! I've not had any praise for SKY, other than perhaps they have found a new way to beat the system and their PR is over the top.

I feel a bit better now! :p

I appreciate your efforts to bring some common sense to this discussion. Unfortunately, it appears any attempt to discuss performance in any objective way is rapidly dismissed. My assumption is that there is an emotion-driven aversion to Sky by others that drives this thread now and a lot of post hoc rationalization for that feeling.

would not be wrong.

Thus, we see a mirror of ourselves in the riders we support. They have some definition of purity and ideals. When they are criticised or alleged to be doping, then the self hits back.

Don't know what the fuss is all about (although clearly rational thought isn't top of most people's agendas). With huge funding and expertise British Cycling systematically dismantled the world order of track cycling to the point where the IOC have changed the rules to stop GB winning so many medals again. Nevertheless GB remain the overwhelming world power on the track, with a bagfull of golds to follow in a couple of weeks. I don't recall even a rumour of doping in the GB team in the time they have essentially embarrassed the traditional cycling nations.

It was always the intention to focus on the track first, and then look to the road. They've done that and now we are seeing the same dominance come to the fore, based on the same principles laid down and perfected on the track. As Brits we get it, it must really stick in the throat for us to come along and smash the sport's back doors in. Hence we get laughable threads like this from envious and annoyed anglophobes and self loathing Brits. Please continue, it's become essential daily viewing.

Sky do not systematically dope, because by extension it would mean British Cycling systematically does. And that is absolutely ridiculous to suggest.

The funniest part is you all put your hopes in AC to stop this dominance, yet he is a confirmed drugs cheat. With plenty in the history books to suggest much more (is that evidence? Hard to say what the definition is on here)

Because Brits are the noblest anti-dopers ever. They never forgive dopers like Linford Christie.

Otoh, all the circumstantial evidence, intranspasrancy, long history of cycling? No way man!

Brits could never ever cheat! They are the epitome of cycling! We have to go back to Hinault-Lemond for a similar clean performance, but it's simply that Wiggo and Froome are indeed at that level.

Why would anyone even wonder about this? Wiggo is a great TT specialist and superbe tempo climber= Hinault! The parallel is striking!

Nothing to see here, move along.

This is where your comment really goes off the rails. Cycling fandom is based less on nationalism than most other sports, and for example I come from a country that's at best a cycling backwater, I like Sky, I like Froome and Cav and I think Wiggins is hilarious, but I'm also extremely sceptical of their performances lately.
