This has nothing to do with the ongoing everybody dislikes Quintana discussion, but just a neat little detail I just discovered.
The team currently known as 'Movistar' started out - as Reynolds - in 1980.
Valverde is from 25 April 1980.
Valverde and the team are basically the same age.

Hopefully they both retire at the same age as well then. :)

What have you got against the team?
Don't really understand why you'd dislike Valverde - or any rider - either, but how do you dislike something as intangible as a team? Ten, twenty years from now the riders that may be on the team might never have had anything to do with Valverde...

The team supported Valverde even during his ban. That tells me all I need to know about what's going on inside that team.

(picture taken from article in which Boonen describes the Reasoned Decision as a load of "rehashed information" and of USADA "They see themselves now as the most sacred bean of the world, while they only talk nonsense", before you make any comments about how the photo - which is obviously from 3 years earlier - predates Armstrong being officially discredited. And also before you critique the merit of pictures of rider chit-chat in the péloton, you placed a lot of importance on péloton chit-chat when it was to discredit Valverde for the alleged poor treatment of Gilbert)

What on earth does any of that have to do with my post?

Stop supporting riders based on just their nationality (and in your case gender as well). It's sad and pathetic.

Actually 1980 is whey because what is now a WT team. They actually started at a lower level in the mid 70's.

As far as I can tell there's about two riders you have any respect for that aren't Belgians.
The point was there was obvious implications to do with another part of the board in your reason for having a dislike for Movistar, so I was pointing out that some of your favourites aren't so high and mighty either, but without the intention of calling anybody pathetic in the process.

And what makes you think I literally cheer for every Spanish rider or female rider? Have you never seen me post about Lizzie Deignan, Raúl Alarcón, Óscar Sevilla or Ángel Vicioso? Or, even within the Abarcá umbrella, José Joaquín Rojas for that matter?

If you can't tell the difference between a rider verbally abusing another rider because his Team Manager made some anti-doping remarks and being on a photo talking to a cyclist with a doping past than I don't know what to tell you.

As for Boonen's remarks, he says plenty of dumb things, especially with regards to Valverde.

I only cheer for riders who are not afraid to attack from a long way out. Nibali, Contador, Gilbert, sometimes Sagan and Van Avermaet, Benoot, Bardet (in the Tour), etc.

There's just not many of them sadly.

You will never see me cheering for someone like Jurgen Van den Broeck.

It's called loyalty. They remained loyal to Valverde during his ban and he has remained loyal to them after. Of course it also helps that Valverde is comfortable at Movistar.

Ah, The No True Scotsman fallacy.

You're an apologist, nothing more.

Team Movistar is bad for cycling, but luckily the future of Spanish cycling is looking bad. Once Valverde retires, it's over.

Marc Soler has a lot of potential. There are a couple of youngsters coming through that also have a lot of potential. One is a rookie with Movistar this year (Jaime Castrillo) and another is with one of the two new Spanish Pro Conti teams. Spanish cycling has a future.

Just the Spanish cycling culture.

So, how do you decide which Spanish riders aren't part of this mysterious "Spanish cycling culture"? I pressume Contador isn't (wasn't) part of it...

Only Flecha wasn't part of it.

Spanish cycling culture = too much focus on stage races, poorly organized races and too lax when it comes to doping.

Belgian cycling culture = too much focus on one-day races.

Italian cycling culture = used to be an ideal mix of the two, but is now sadly in decline.

Contador is forgiven because he attacks from far out and made races interesting to watch. His poor results in the classics is the only negative I can think of.

Nibali obviously is the ideal cyclist, because he excels at both the classics and Grand Tours. And not just the classics that suit him, but ALL of them. Hope he rides Roubaix at least once in his career too, he did very well on the cobbles in the Tour of 2014.

Why not just let every cyclist excel at what he (or she) is best at? You don't have to be good at everything to be a good bike rider.
And a race doesn't have to include a race from far out to be interesting.

How would they know if they never try something different?
