Makes you wonder why HTC didn't get a sponsor huh. The jersey is ugly, no problem Contador will be in red and rainbow jersey for most of the season anyway.

Weren't HTC a much bigger budget team, with a budget inflated by a rich hobbyist? If for instance, one of the current big budget teams suddenly needed a sponsor, I'd be surprised if the kind of money Sharp are bringing to Garmin would last them a month.

Tinkoff is a rather big sponsor by the looks of it. Omega Pharma was also looking for a new team last year. Many other teams found new sponsors since the demise of HTC.

There was a weird rumour of some russian big sponsor coming in for Saxo team yesterday, covering Contador contract.

wow. you got that right.

haven't had a chance to read through this thread yet or the article, but i thought tinkoff left the sport because he was unsure about cycling's "culture".

As I understand it, Saxo is also one of the smaller budget World Tour teams, like Garmin. Wasn't HTC one of those teams with a budget more than twice that of the Garmins or Saxos of the peloton? And they were looking for a lead sponsor, rather than a secondary sponsor.

I'm not sure that anyone has brought in a new commercial sponsor of that sort of magnitude recently. Those sort of budgets seem to be the province of teams who have access to a sponsor or backer simply not all that concerned about the market value of cycling sponsorship.

Orica's commitment is quite significant and is a company without any natural connection to cycling - or senior management/board with a connection. However the investment also covers the women's team (and maybe some spillover into some other Cycling Australia endeavours), but the total dollar commitment is large.

And Im not sure how small Saxo's budget could have been when they had the Schlecks, Fabian, Sastre, Conti et al on their rosters over the last few years.

The biggest window in cycling is still Tour de France.
People who only watch cycling in juli remember the GC-winner and don't care for the sprinters.

Only Contador was hot stuff when Riis got him, hence why they've been on a tight budget the last two years.

Both Fabian and the Schlecks were now where near the salaries on Riis' team, as compared to what they get now. Sastre was never paid the salary of a superstar, even though he may have the Palmarès of one.

Sorry to say but Mark Cavendish is one of the most popular cyclist in the world right now, ahead of Andy and on par with Alberto. Obviously below of Lance, who everyone knows it seems.

I agree.
But if you ask a non-cyclingfan who have won the sprinter-jersey,
who won most stages in GT's and who won a GT, I bet they wil bring up, Indurain, Armstrong and Contador won TdF.

That is why sponsors prefer to support teams with good GC-riders.

He's only on par with Contador in Great Britain. He is quite popular though. ;)

A little anecdote I digged up about Tinkoff and how he made his millions.

http://www.kommersant.com/p591881/r_1/Oleg_Tinkoff_Pours_Out_Beer/

Innerring also made a portrait after the sponsorship was announced.

http://inrng.com/2012/06/oleg-tinko..._campaign=Feed:+inrng/inrng0+(The+Inner+Ring)

No doubt the guy got the funds, and he also know the market value of top riders and their price tag.
Now I´m even more sure the sponsorship and the increase of the budget Riis now have to his disposal, must be substantial higher now.

Tinkoff, the guy who gave Jaksche his second chance, now, 5 years later, meets Riis, who kept faithful on his words to Jaksche ("If you speak, I´ll do everything I can to keep you out of cycling!").

So now 1 1/2 Russian teams in WT cycling, Katusha and Saxo-Tinkoff...

Cold war is over, but in cycling, we´ll see battles of the anglophile and the Russian world in near future... Tinkoff-Katusha-Astana-Rusvelo-... against Sky-Garmin-GreenEdge... The sport becomes global.

Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, France will stay important, but won´t play a superior role any more.

I wouldn´t exactly say Quickstep and Likeygas play minor roles in cycling nowadays.
