I don't think Visma even expected to win the Giro himself. The whole team rode very actively to victory on many stages. Yates was often alone. They were also active in the sprints. They also have 2 stage wins, tomorrow they could add another victory.
Unlike with Jonas etc., Visma has shown that you don't always have to put all your eggs in one basket. Martinez was also second last year without much team support. As long as you're not the front runner and need a team, the strategy works.
Yesterday Yates was still angry with the team because a different tactic had probably been discussed. Today the big win.

I don't like Visma but I have to admire their professionalism.

Sometimes they make mistakes but unlike UAE they don't make the same mistake twice and ride as a team not as a group of riders.

Its also worth remembering that they not only have top riders like Vingegaard, Van Aert and now Simon Yates, they also have incredible propects like Nordhagen or Brennan who has probably been the best neopro of the season so far.

Daisy Gesink, wife of Robert, has passed away. The sorrow this guy already has had to face in his life, and now this... it's just unfair. RIP.
Ooof, the guy really has it rough. His father dying in a MTB crash while going downhill and him having a mental blockade afterwards, him leaving the Vuelta because of complications with his wife's pregnancy and so on. I feel for him and his children.

I am expecting to see Tullet after the altitude training camp in Sierra Nevada.

He was there, he is climbing very well this year, and probably will be in the Tour, replacing Laporte.

Replacing Laporte in the team, not in the same functions.
That would be insane for the mountains, with Ben the 5th best climber (potentially). Can't think of a stronger mountain team, maybe UAE with Ayuso, Del Toro, Almeida and Adam Yates.

I'm confident that with Giro and altitude in his legs, Wout will be significantly better at the Tour. Still think it's a bit risky to take three light climbers out of 7 domestiques. It's true that Matteo is a beast and would not hesitate to assist on rolling terrain if something dangerous accured, but still. I would feel safer with Valter as Laporte's replacement, but if they take Ben - they know what they are doing and we are in for a treat.

This Giro was a reminder that UAE still don't have it all their own way. Today was an amazing ride from Simon Yates but it was also a team effort. Wout van Aert pulled out one of those rides we know he is capable of but haven't seen for a while.

It's absolutely hilarious that UAE and EF gave Wout van Aert a 10 minute buffer to climb Finestre. All they had to do was bring the gap down to 5 minutes and that would have been sufficient to pull him back before the summit.

The guys in the team cars are paid to do a job. You'd think the pretty obvious tactic of WvA serving as a satellite rider (& totally known because it's been done by Visma time and time again in mountain stages in a GT) would have been noted by at least someone in their cars. Anyone. Even just the mechanic sitting in the back. If they speculated a worse case scenario in which Yates might crest the summit with a 20 second lead or so, it obviously required nullifying that threat before the climb.

As for Van Aert, he's a legendary rider and it's rides like this that make his career amazing. It was a pretty dramatic moment yesterday when even the commentators didn't know where WvA was and then boom, Yates rode up to his wheel and that was game over for the Giro.

He can't be screaming in Yates' ears for an hour, he just has to give information. Which is what he does. It's super obvious to you, because you have the time gaps in the corner of your screen, but obviously Yates doesn't.
I know that. And it's not about the information like Van Aert is getting over Finestre and is waiting on x location, or even that Carapaz and Del Toro are still together.

It's the "You're riding for pink Wout" with the flattest possible delivery.

But a lot of that is personal preference tbh.

"Come on Yatesy, come on! You're riding for that big fat sponsor bonus you'll get for winning the Giro. Come on! Froomey is in his nursing home watching you smash his Finestre climbing record on tv, come on!"

I mean Yates literally called Marc Reef a chump on Friday evening so I get the flatness of the delivery. Like a wife giving her husband directions whilst sitting in the passenger seat of a car the day after a row.

Just kidding. In all seriousness Marc Reef will forever be that man who totally panicked when Rog dropped the chain 2 years ago on Monte Lussari. He was the DS riding on the back of the motorbike behind.

So Visma with a reduced budget from last year and with a B-tier climbing support for Yates win a Grand Tour. Now in one month some dutch bank money will flow in and we will see them dominating the herd like shepherds.

There was actually an interview in danish with Jesper Mørkøv, who was driving the car in that clip, where they asked what they were telling Yates during the stage. He said that Yates is not a rider who likes to be coached or needs a pep talk, he just wants the facts.
