According to De Telegraaf the Tour de France team will be Groenewegen, Kelderman, Wagner, Vanmarcke, Roosen, Lindeman, Gesink (?) and Martens plus another rider. Looks like the Lotto teams that combined Greipel's train with a GC rider plus his two bottle carriers.

Groenewegen hasn't done a single WT race for the team. Interesting.
He seems to be in great shape and recently won Rund um Köln by beating Greipel in the sprint, he's pretty fast.
It's not like they have lots of other guys who'd be a better addition to their Tour squad.
Hopefully they'll let Gesink recover, bringing a him to the Tour just because they want to have him at the Tour would be really stupid.

Perhaps George Bennett?
7th in California and 14th in Dauphine. Is the only one that can stay in the mountains with Wilco and Robert for a while.

Another weak team from TLJ for a GT. How can they really expect Kelderman (or Gesink) to really compete for a Top3/Top5 GC when they send such a weak team. Oke, Kruijswijk did it at the Giro, but this is the TdF not the Giro. It's going to be another year of seeing TLJ trying to hold on as long as possible instead of trying to make the race. Such a shame.

Right, he's the only rider they have who's a proven winner. That doesn't explain his shitty schedule up until this point, though. No way his train is properly dialed in to be competing at this level, IMO.

They do not better riders available at this moment of the season for support in the mountains apart from Bennett who is likely to be the ninth rider.

That is a matter of planning isn't it? Roglic and Battaglin would be able to provide some support. Furthermore, there is no need to fill the entire team with climbers if the team has one clear objective. But they're doing what they've always done; bringing a team that has more than one objective (sprint & GC). This will weaken the team on mountainstages.

Unlike the Giro, they will not have to defend a leaders jersey. Although before the Giro we would have probably said the same for kruijswijk.

But it's extremely unlikely Gesink or Kelderman will have to defend yellow.

That's true, but this team is probably not really going to be helpful in gaining GC places like podium. Other teams are probably bringing dedicated teams instead of splitting it sprint/gc.

It's not like they have much choice considering who rode the Giro and that Gesink is injured.

They don't have much of a GC threat, obviously, but they could have just brought a couple of sprint support riders and picked the rest of the team for breakaways. Are they really planning on trying to compete with Lotto Soudal and Etixx trains?

Yep they are. They even did that quite well in a number of races containing the LottoBE and Giant sprint trains. But it will be harder in the TDF when all the sprint trains are there.

It's one thing to compete in smaller races where not all of the main trains are there and some of those that are there aren't at full strength. And another to try to drag race against the strongest at the Tour. It seems to me (and I accept that I could be underestimating them) that they would be better off giving Groenewegen two lead outs and have them try to put him in position to ride one of the big trains. It is a disadvantage to be on the end of a quite strong train when riding against very strong ones, not an advantage.

If they are their as a sprint train they will also find themselves under a lot of pressure to help chase. And indeed it will be in their interests to chase because the sprint is their only option. If on the other hand they are there with a small number of sprint support riders surfing other people's trains they can instead try to have another rider in the break. It just seems to me that when you have a promising but unproven sprinter up against the best in the world, you are better off splitting your chances between breakaway riding and sprinting. As opposed to approaching the race as if you have Kittel on your team.

Re: LottoNL-Jumbo

I'm also interested in Kelderman going stage hunting instead of riding for the GC.
Most of all if he and LottoNL are smart enough in that regard. Kelderman should be able to target stage wins when in the right break, but will he be able to play the game? Will he be able to pick the right stages? Will he just sit at the back of the bunch like Cummings does and then after 10 days come out and try to win a stage?

Were talking about LottoNL, it's all about somehow finishing in the top 10.

It is no pressure, the goal is to get to a good sprint train in 2018. It's good gaining experience. LottoNL has nothing to lose anyway with no Gesink here
And lots to win by allowing him to recuperate properly.

Kelderman was never going for the GC. It was agreed he would go stage hunting instead of riding for a GC and Lotto-Jumbo said that when it was sure Gesink wouldn't ride the TdF those plans were not going to change and that Kelderman will ride with a free role.

Who would you take instead of the guys that are selected?
