I personally do not think he is ill or is having sinus issues but I do think that he is certainly a bit below where he was last year but Cadel is saying that he is improving each day so I think he will be very strong in the Pyrenees and in the final time trial. I also do not think he is 'over-the-hill' in his career. What I am really liking about Cadel in this Tour is he is talking on the race where he can, is attacking a fair bit and is making the race entertaining. If Evans didn't ride a hard tempo up the climb in yesterday's stage and if BMC didn't force such a selection in the final 40km would we have seen such an entertaining stage? I doubt that.

Definitely not doing La Vuelta because he is a confirmed starter for Colorado. The Worlds are also a target for him so maybe he will do the races in Canada and maybe another set of races before the worlds. Maybe something like the Tour of Britain or some one day races in Belgium?

If BMC were going to do the Giro for Cadel then I would imagine they would be similar to this year's squad. I think they would provide strong support as the team would have a real direction in the race. Johann Tschopp has finished in the top 15 in the past two Giros and guys like Frank are only going to get better.

I agree with you about Cadel and the Ardennes but I doubt he will get much of a shot for the rest of his career with Gilbert on the team. If he really targeted them one year I do believe that he could win at least one of the classics.

Sorry for going off topic!

Yeah Cadel is a lot more matter of fact about his race this year than previous years. Not looking for excuses or problems not that he did not have any in the past. Van Garderen is looking good and BMC must be pleased with his race so far and future prospects but still plenty to work on for him. Tschopp has to be in the Tour next year. He did well in the Giro.

TJ gets a drop of "Nelson's Eye"?

Big etiquette mistake today ... and caught red-handed on VT.

Could cost him a lot more than the white jersey in future.

Elephants and pro cyclists never forget.

I would've voted yes without a doubt until the Alps this year. He climbed better than Cadel. Thats pretty solid climbing.

His punctured team leader (Cadel) begged him for a wheel ... from about a couple of yards away.

TJ swung his head in the opposite direction, apparently pretending not to hear.

When interviewed after the race, TJ could barely explain his actions.

I thought it was very telling when it all came together and all the BMC guys were close, except for Tejay. He makes for a terrible domestique. I thought what we saw the other way was just his lack of experience in that role showing, but maybe there was more to it than that.

Teejay:

“I heard he had a puncture. I thought we had another teammate in there, but in hindsight I should have waited for him. I couldn’t hear much because of all the shouting and crashing. It was chaotic,” van Garderen said after the stage.

Tejay was ahead of Cadel. That entire video was taken after Tejay went by. And he only says "puncture" he doesn't say "Tejay." Well, I think he says something else, but it's certainly not "Tejay."

The ITV4 highlights show the 'mistake' much more clearly.

There is no question of Cadel failing to appeal directly for help from TJ.

TJ messed up big time. But he'll learn from it for sure. He's a young kid and next he'll be sure to help his leader out

I'd like to see the highlights then. All I've seen is the above video, plus obviously the NBC Sports Network video where all you see is Cadel saying something to Tejay when he punctured. I don't know what Cadel said.

Neither do I, but that is not the point.

Road racing is a team sport.

The responsibility is on Juniors like TJ to pay attention to the team leader's needs.

Even if Cadel failed to make himself fully understood, TJ should still have stopped.

As for the possibility that TJ never heard Cadel ... that's hard to believe after watching the ITV4 highlights.

if you want to itv4 highlights go to cycling torrents. But it's very obvious. Cadel was yelling 'TJ' and TJ actually looked back at Cadel several times but just kept going

I just mentioned this in another thread
Yeah, TJVG showed that in the previous stage, even he was pacing Evans, he would gap a few bike length, then looking back kinda of like saying "come on, catch my wheel". I think he felt his white jersey might be in jeopardy at that stage when Rolland and Pinot are riding away.

And frankly if you don't have the legs why would I wait for you. Same thing apply to F and W case. But that is a little complicated since W TT a little better than F. But in BMC scenario in this tour i think TJVG TT level probably is above Evans. And if he also climb better than Evans, why the hell you want to wait for Evans. I think that probably is his thought.

I like TJ an ambitious young men, and he said many times that he believed he can win the tour maybe as soon as next year.

Sure, but he still ended up losing a good amount of time leading Cadel to the line. I understand that Tejay might be a bit impatient when he's in position to wind something too, but considering what he did on that stage, that's why I'm a bit skeptical of the contention of some people here that he intentionally left Cadel out to dry with full knowledge of the situation.

It just doesn't match what he's done up until now.

He needs to jump to a much better team (Garmin). BMC have proven to be pretty incompetent with all of the talent they do have. I still cannot understand how Cadel pulled it off last year.

You can be ambitious as you like, but a young man in a team sport like cycling really needs to be certain that they have Merckx-like superiority over everyone else, before they decide that none of the rules apply to them.

If not, their career is likely to be short and miserable.

He was with a better team. Everyone thinks that HTC was just a Cavendish-leadout vehicle, but they had Tony Martin and Danny Pate and Tejay van Garderen and Peter & Martin Velits and Kanstantsin Siutsou too. And the year before they also had Maxime Monfort and Andre Greipel. Plus Hincapie, EBH, and Mick Rogers the year before that.

You could put together a team that would blow this year's Sky out of the water with 2009-2011 HTC. Seriously, imagine a team this year or next year with, say, Tejay as the leader, and Martin, Velits, Siutsou, Monfort, Hincapie, and EBH working for him.

Really is a pity what happened to them.

Because I think he thinks there is no way Evans could win or even podium if Evans keep climbing like that, so protecting Evans is no longer his No1 priority on his check list. Protecting his white jersey and getting a as high as possible GC position for himself become his top goal.

Of course I could be wrong, this could be just an honest mistake. Or maybe he will keep riding for Evans due to the management pressure. I am sure they will have a long team meeting tonight.

Really? One bad day and now he can't climb? Calm down people!

Because he was the best in the race and his team kept him out of trouble. That is how you win a bike race.

He actually says "Puncture, Cadel, puncture".

Also, youtube's camera stabilisation effects are hilarious in this video. Check out the distance to go thing at 0:34.

Exactly, he is yelling what you said above. Teejay has continually said that he is working for Cadel and white is not an ambition this year. Some people seem to want to cause trouble.
