1000+ point gambles

29 riders had a 2011 value of 1000+, and I'm surprised to see how many have been picked - how much value do you think there is in some of these big point picks?

RIDER 2011 SCORE POPULARITY
1596 3
SANCHEZ GONZALEZ Samuel 1576 0

Surprised that no one picked him. His ITT is good and he might go better at the TDF. He still is yet to win at the Ardennes but is consistent, so he could win one. He also has the possibility of doing the Vuelta.

Let me see, perhaps because he in 2010 scored 2204 points:rolleyes:

But next year he may or may not start the Giro, then he has to win it and then go to the TDF and go well. If he does the giro he will not be able to the Giro, TDF and the Vuelta.

It would be Giro, TDF, Olympics- rest then WC and GDL.

I considered Larsson, Rasmussen for the TT points but in the end left them out because the big points will be likeley to be picked up by Martin, Cance, maybe Wiggins, Porte and Froome possibly.

Another tester under consideration was Zabriskie because he was like 160 points or so, and theres plenty of points at the US nationals ITT but in the end he couldn't fit into my team for one reason or another.

Same reason with Zabriskie for me. Neither could Larsson.

Assuming that Martin Cancellara Wiggins Contador Evans Porte share the top spots thats not really many points to be basing a pick around.

If Bobridge was not focusing on track i could envisage him replacing Porte. Porte needs hilly courses, which is why i think he could win at Valkenburg.

having said that I'm surprised that some people have gone for Basso, as there doesnt seem to be much chance of providing a profit of more than say 200 (I'd hoped for more from Cav and EBH). 2009 - 2x good GTs 1100, 2010 - 1x excellent GT 1000, 2011 - 1x good GT 900 (appreciate this is a simplification of his scoring). The risk/reward doesnt seem to be worthwhile to me, whereas someone like nibali or farrar would could score 500-1000 points more I think are good picks.

My logic is he is hopefully sure to win the Giro. Even if he gets only 200 points more that is still fine. 200 X 33 =6600+ 7500= 14100 ( my case 14098 )
If all my riders get 200 points more than last year that gets me into the top 20 ( or so hopefully ). The margin for profit for riders like Sicard and Lloyd is huge as well. Pozzato and Renshaw can hopefully get me more of a turnover as well.

I wanted Farrar ( as i think he can win the Olympic RR ) but i thought it was risky.

I think Pozzato can score real well. Given the number of one day races where there isn't much competition from the WorldTour team, that's where he can make his profit.

I think I have probably taken the biggest risk/reward strategy with 5 riders over 850, which i also gives me a high uniqueness score.

CAVENDISH Mark 1469
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald 1391
NIBALI Vincenzo 1127
FARRAR Tyler 953
GESINK Robert 868

PINOTTI Marco 373
BOL Jetse 165
KELDERMAN Wilco 134
CATTANEO Mattia 108
DUMOULIN Tom 81
MARKUS Barry 81
GOOS Marc 76
VAN DER SANDE Tosh 70
DURBRIDGE Luke 65
HEPBURN Michael 64
CHAVEZ RUBIO Johan Esteban 64
MAJKA Rafal 57
RATHE Jakob 50
ANACONA GOMEZ Winner Andrew 47
CHUZHDA Oleg 46
HOSTE Leif 44
VALLS FERRI Rafael 39
LOCATELLI Stefano 34
EIJSSEN Yannick 28
PAUWELS Serge 18
BOIVIN Guillaume 14
KREDER Raymond 13
STUYVEN Jasper 11
DENNIS Rohan 10
SICARD Romain 0
LLOYD Matthew 0
BELLIS Jonathan 0
AUGUSTYN John-Lee 0

the bolded riders are there ones i am most nervous about, the riders in italics if they suffer injury or similar then of course i have no chance to win, but i can still consider how profitable or not my cheaper picks turn out to be.

I am particularly pleased that Jasper Stuyven is a unique pick, as he could pick up 150 points, Raymond Kreder is unique as well but not such high hopes.
That is quite risky/ an interesting strategy. Good luck.
However i doubt Cav will earn more points than this year.
Kreder is a good pick talent wise but i doubt JV will use him much this year.
Already got some points with Dennis.

I just could not fit in Larsson or Zabriskie.
That was the reasoning behind ( everyone on the CQ game practically picking Pozzato )

The two Spidertechs will surprise many.

I considered Boily but decided he just did not fit. He was impressive though at Avenir.

Deignan is racing for UnitedHealthCare this year in the US, so you're off the hook.

That'll teach me to keep an eye on what the guys on my shortlist are doing.

Not a good pick then, considering all the silly NE races across the pond (although Utah is classified now - I think, and he wasn't too expensive).

Anyway, this year is about data collection, so it probably helps to have someone on the US scene as I'll follow what's going on there more than I normally do.

So I got 55. 50 from Richie, and 5 from Mick Rogers.

Looking for a better turnout in the time trial.
