Both seemed interesting picks but with Bernal and Sosa in the team the upside was limited. Now this injury changes everything.bminchow said:

And yes, with Bernal skipping the Giro I think most of the teams selecting him are screwed.

As tempted as I was to ape Carlton Kirby's many teeth-grating, eyeroll-inducing mispronounced 'waiting for Godot' puns in the Romandie coverage this week, the fact remains that David Gaudu - despite the fantastic form and two-week haul - is a fairly popular rider. It's the ultra-rare Chris Lawless (3 teams) and Rui Costa (2 teams) that really are the difference makers this week.

Not the biggest shakeup this week, as none of the top 10 overall were in the top 10 for the week. fauniera gains almost 50 points on Object but still trails by a couple of hundred. The biggest shakeup was Kryvo plummeting off the podium with only 67 points on the week, and karaev moved up 3 points with 12th place on the week. Nyssinator and TheArt crack the top 10, while we lose Googolplex and SafeBet.
This week is real quiet, sort of a calm before the storm - the only real top-level points are from the 3-day 2.1 Madrid race, with not many teams invited that have popular riders in this game. However, on Saturday we have our first stage of the year's first Grand Tour, and Sunday sees the start of the Tour of California. The big GC points for those will come in future weeks, so for now lets take a deep breath and get ready.

In the giro I have Landa, Nibali, Zakarin, Gaviria, Chaves, Carboni, Honoré and De Buyst. A well balanced team of eight riders. Go, go, go!

My Giro team just got a little more interesting with the addition of Dunbar ... at the expense of those with Bernal. Not sure how he'll go but there should be a few points in him.
Otherwise I have Nibali and Gav ... so popular that they're neutral in effect.
It will be a miracle if Mareczko scores 5 points, he is a write off.
Hopeful with Ciccone for stage points and a mediocre GC.
Chaves may get points but he's almost neutral too.
Nishimura might fluke a few points.
Oomen is my hope of significant scoring really.
California looks better for me with my best picks Pogacar and Schachmann plus Philipsen.
Can't wait for the racing though, whatever happens with my team.

It's very comfortable going into the Giro with Nibali and Landa in my team, I must say. I also have some hopefuls for the flatter stages in Ewan, Moschetti and Gibbons. Chaves will be interesting to see. I have a feeling he may surprise and finally return to his level.
Finally, I have Bakelants who is probably not getting many points but usually he overachieves in GTs and for some reason almost always ends at around 20th on GC.

The Giro should be fine with Nibali, Landa, Zakarin and Gaviria.
Ciccone, Conci and Carboni could also score some points.
For Cali it's mainly Porte, maybe Eg and Contreras (one of my better picks) will also score a few points. I've pretty much given up on Cav, but he was a low risk pick.

Strange year for me. Got points in races I don't care much about and dropped down into the midfield during the favourite part of my season. Some picks I already question, some obvious misses I'm biting myself over, but oh well...
I don't expect too much from the Giro this year (mainly because I don't want to be disappointed), but there's potential... I guess...

Finally a week that was half-decent, with Gaudu doing most of the heavy lifting. Up 11 places to 67th.
Not my year, this. It doesn't help being one of the very few who has avoided the (at least until now) misfiring Kittel and Cavendish when the ones I actually picked aren't doing much better. My team is either ill or injured (Porte, Gallopin, Vichot, Barguil, Aru, O'Connor, Valls), caught doping (Pantano) or just not performing (Bouhanni, Felline, Theuns, Meintjes).

Van Der Poel came for a month, like a beautiful and exciting exchange student, and seems to have spread fairy dust on the rest of my team. Gaudu has exceeded all expectations whilst Lambrecht was a revelation in the Ardennes. Planckaert is shaking off the Katusha shroud and even Kung picked up a bit after an average classics campaign.
Nothing too exciting for the Giro. Chavez, Nibali and Gaviria are neutral. Not expecting anything from Hindley or Honore, which leaves O'Connor as the only real difference maker. Given his season so far, a top ten seems very optimistic.
Luckily, Porte is back at California, which Trek will surely demand he take seriously? Atapuma, Cavendish and Bauhaus could all pick up points as well
And at Dunkerque there's Thomas, Navardauskas and Van Der Horn. The latter has been a disastrous pick so far, only rider in support of Van Aert, so I'm hoping this is the start of his individual campaign
