Here's my team with some short comments

VAN DIJKE Mick I hope he gets to ride for himself in some short stage races with a TT. Should be able to score way more than he did last year.
MORGADO Antonio Tomas Difficult to say exactly what we'll get from the junior star, but given how well he was riding at times in 2023 I think there's hope. .At least he'll get plenty of opportunities, starting right away in TDU. I have been following his career since his first days in the junior ranks and the most interesting thing at this point is to see how long will the 'no-DNF's' -streak last. He has yet to DNF a cycling race. It's a proof that he never gives up.
DEL TORO ROMERO Isaac Avenir winner is in every year, no questions asked. Nothing but top 10's for the Mexican hope from other stage races he took part last year. As with Morgado, will get plenty of nice opportunities during the season.
KULSET Johannes Best climber from the Norwegian talents, perhaps the best in years. I'm a big fan of Uno-X and the Kulset family so this was an easy call.
STEWART Jake Just way too cheap with 113 eventhough his new team is quite literally stacked with sprinters. Still think he'll get enough chances, especially if he climbs better than some of the sprinters in the team.
THIERRY Pierre Unique pick, wohoo! Pierre was killing it in French Amateur circuit last year, sneaky attack after another brought him some nice wins. Tactical aspect of the game I think he handles better than many. Hoping for a hybrid of Ewen Costiou-Kevin Vauquelin
STAUNE-MITTET Johannes Another Norwegian climbing/GC talent. Easy pick, best U23 rider last year who moves to Visma.
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley The comeback continues
STORM Theodor Why an earth Ineos don't wanna set up U23 team? Would be so much easier for cases like Michael Leonard, who albeit being a big talent, barely even raced in the juniors and had to jump WT (imo) way too soo. I don't think that's the case with Theodor though. He's a been a stud in every level so far and something tells me he won't have any problems jumping to a new level. We'll see.
RYAN Archie New team for Archie and let's hope for full healthy season this time. Think he could be even leading the team at some smaller, hillier one day races. Need to gain that trust from the team first.
POLLEFLIET Gianluca Behind Sammy B there are not many fast guys in AG2R (shock). Pollefliet and Gautheron, maybe Lapeira, will definitely get their chances in the coming season. Extra good bike handler because of the past with BMX. Been slowly getting better every year.
WIDAR Jarno Star in the junior category and at times the little dude was simply unstoppable. I'm counting that he could get a shot to ride with the main team in 2nd part of the season. Depends ofc how the first part goes, but I have hope for the pocket rocket.
DEL GROSSO Tibor Please ride more road.
FAURE PROST Alexy The real breakthrough rider in the U23 ranks. I expected him to be good, but TOP 5 in Baby Giro right away and 2nd in Aosta after that?! In the junior days, he was one of the most active juniors I've ever seen. Sometimes it costed him a race or GC but the way he was just going full send everywhere, it was crazy.
Victor Vaneeckhoutte raced with similar style in 2023. If the development continues as rapid as it's been, he's waaay to cheap to be 36.
BRUTTOMESSO Alberto Bruttomesso originally comes from the sprinting school of Borgo Molino, which is an Italian junior team. Feels like every other Italian sprinter has been riding in that Junior team and Bruttomesso is no exception. Fast enough to score some points from smaller races and when Bauhaus is not present, he'll probably get some protection.
SIMMONS Colby Next Simmons in the World Tour. Pretty consistent throughout the 2023 and some good sprints in there. Faster than his older brother I think. Maybe smarter too.
MIHKELS Madis Saw that Madis is starting in TDU and decided to try. Jury is still out there about whether he'll become more of a classics talent with a fast finish, or more like a regular sprinter. I'm leaning towards the future classics rider myself, but we'll see what happens. Uncapped potential.
HAJEK Alexander Hit & miss. 2023 was nothing special, but perhaps now with Bora some sort of minor breakthrough is possible. He's not won a race since the junior days. Decent climber with ok finish.
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio Billy was cheap
MAGNIER Paul Paul himself told to Directvelo just recently that he's not exactly certain what kind of rider he is and I agree with him. Puncheur, yes, but I was almost surprised how well he was sprinting last year. He said he wants to see what are his limits in the mountains and so do I.
TURNER Ben Comeback kid for the classics? Not the luckiest chap in 2023.
GELDERS Gil Too cheap considering he's moving to QS. I saw him racing last year at Gent-Wevelgem U23 and the most hilarious part was that when he crossed the line, he never stopped. Idk whether he missed that it was already a finish or what happened, but later on I kinda realised that's his style of racing. Just churning away, riding from the saddle, some old school vibes innit. Fast & versatile and top level attitude.
CHRISTEN Jan Won a Baby Giro stage right away in his first U23 season and did some big races (Romandie) considering his age. Not exactly sure what UAE is planning to do with him and what kind of schedule he'll get, but the multitalent has been so impressive in every level so far, that I couldn't skip him.
UIJTDEBROEKS Cian RedBull gives you wi...Visma gives you wings? Perhaps he could get his TT to a better level with the new team. Don't think the climbing skills will be an issue.
HAYTER Leo Thought about taking Ethan first but I'm so annoyed by his positiniong in every race, like why bro, try riding at the front for once :D Well, this pick was about Leo and I'm just hoping he'd be healthy whole season. The potential is there.
HAGENES Per Strand More Norwegians! So versatile that I don't know what he's going to target this year. So far the working recipe has been hillier one day races/stages, where he has attacked like a mad man on different kind of finales. Been very difficult to catch after those attacks. Won the Junior worlds vs Gregoire in same fashion.
NYS Thibau Oyess. Thibau truly becoming an elite level road racer.
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao New team, new success?
WRIGHT Fred I was 50/50 with Fred. Some wins outside Nats would be nice.
SHEFFIELD Magnus Super season incoming. Been a fan since the HotTubes days.
ASGREEN Kasper Need certified classics winners and here's a one.
GREGOIRE Romain The new French superstar? Coming season will be super interesting. Where is the ceiling or are we close to it already?
EWAN Caleb Feels like pretty much every time I've picked Caleb, he has failed. Perhaps this is not the case now with new team and everything.

Probably included too much junior stuff above but I can't help myself. Thanks to skidmark for hosting the gamez and best of luck to the other players!

I was kinda expecting this to be a fairly "boring", very popular team, so I'm quite happy to see how rare many of my picks actually are.

So fourth season for me here!
I am very exciting for this year. Once again pretty high in the popular table, but we know that doesn´t mean much! Last year I missed Roglic and in 2022 I didn´t select Evenepoel, which disallow me a good placing.
This year Ayuso will be my enemy.. ;) Had him the last two years and had him in my longlist, but he didn´t impress me with his performance in last years vuelta and this year he will be one out of 4 leaders in his main season goal. If he would have chosen the giro as main target without Pogacar going, I would have perhaps decided me for him, but for now I am confident, that my decicion not to pick him was right.

So here is my team.

RODRIGUEZ CANO Carlos - Was nearly three month last year out with a broken collarbone. There had been days in last years tour, where he had been the third best climber in the race and he will have more sole leadership roles than Ayuso and he is one of my favourites riders. So decicion for him and against Ayuso.
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio - Had a pretty bad season because of injuries last season, one of the most obvious picks.
HAYTER Ethan - Same as Carapaz, also a bit more unsure about his potential. But still had been a must pick for me.
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam - also scored less like Carapaz and Hayter last season, but without being injured. Definetely has potential, but could also become a not so good pick.
TEUNS Dylan - A bit surprised, that only 8 players picked him. Couldn´t participate in the Ardennes classics (his main season goal last year.
PLAPP Lucas - First time I picked him and the first 50 points are already in. Think he can return 600- 800 points this season.
ACKERMANN Pascal - New team and I hope new success. Had been one of my favourite riders before his switch to UAE. Hope I can enjoy following him once again.
NYS Thibau - Yesterday and a day after I submitted my team, the news came out that he will once again miss the flandern classic season and will start pretty late in the season. Hmm, still can see him earning 600 points, but after the news came out, I am not so sure anymore.
BENNETT Sam - New team, new luck? AG2R always rides a lot of one day races, where he could score, so I decided to pick him.
ARENSMAN Thymen - also obvious pick. A lot of top riders left Ineos, so more chances to ride for GC for him. For his price definetly a good pick
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe - had a fantastic spring 2022, but from Tour de France 2022 not at top level anymore. Switch of teams could mean that he once again could improve
MEINTJES Louis - Surprised, that only 6 players have him. 814 points in 2022, 264 in 2023. SO room for improvement.
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley - Don´t know if he can get back to his top level, but there is definetly potential for more CQ points. Obvious pick for me.
LUND ANDRESEN Tobias - One of my last and rarer picks. Followed his results last year a bit and can see him breakthrough this season.
FOSS Tobias Svendsen - New team, defintely potential is there. Could also become a bad pick, but one has to try.
BUSATTO Francesco - Hope that he will be the Gregoire 2023 for the 2024 season
LECERF William Junior - Same like Busatto
LAMPERTI Luke - A young talented sprinter for Quickstep, what can go wrong?
GLOAG Thomas - Showed good potential in the beginning of last season, but that struggled with injuries. Potential for more.
RICCITELLO Matthew - Winner of the mountain time trial in the tour de l'Avenir. Result cannot lie.
SCHACHMANN Maximilian - two bad seasons now. Still hope he can come back.
TURNER Ben - Had injuries last year. Potenital for more.
MORGADO Antonio Tomas - Also potential to be Romain Gregoire this season.
THOMAS Benjamin - Didn´t follow his career that much, but he had 816 points in 2022 and only 128 points in 2023. So too risky not to pick him.
DEL TORO ROMERO Isaac - Tour de l'Ávenir winner is always a must pick for me in this game.
STAUNE-MITTET Johannes - He won the Baby Giro and had been favourite also for the tour de l'Ávenir, but then crashed out. Must pick for me.
RAFFERTY Darren - also strong mountain performances in the U23 class. Hope that he will be Lenny Martinez 2024
HAYTER Leo - Struggeld with injuries last season. Potenital is there I think.
VALGREN HUNDAHL (ANDERSEN) Michael - Also could come back from his injuries with potential.
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander - Will definetly score more than 50 points this season.
RYAN Archie - One of most promising young riders and also cheaper than del Toro and Morgado for example.
HERZOG Emil - Hoep for a good first season with Bora after being dissapointing last season.
AUGUST Andrew - Just read a article about him going to Ineos with 18 years. Though about Tarling last season and picked him.

So looking at the full list of entries, we have 525 riders between us, including one woman (Izzy Sharp) and one fairly highly profile announcement of retirement as of last week (Oss)

Now, one thing I do wonder is; were they picked by the same person?
And to whoever picked Sharp; you know there is another game where she will be much more useful:

Okay, here's my team.

Will it be third time lucky with omitting the main popular expensive pick? Evenepoel screwed me in 2022, Roglic screwed me in 2023, but will Ayuso do the same this year? At least he's not as obvious as the two others. He's awesome and can win almost anything, but I'm slightly worried about him doing a full season, as he still rides with pain in his leg from the injury and there might be a slight risk of having to take more time off the bike. But there's good reason he's the obvious choice this year, of course.

Also, being fed up with the Bouhannis, Ackermanns, Alaphilippes, Ewans, Haigs, Honorés, Schachmanns, Moscons, Dumoulins and Buchmanns underperforming, I went with a very no-nonsense approach this year.

I present to you the team which doesn't have license to suck. Basically, if you don't have a very good excuse for sucking in 2023, you don't make the team.

I mentioned earlier that I switched out my most expensive rider because of some news about a week ago. I also said I'm not influenced by TDU startlist. But Jay Vine just had to go when he's not defending his Aussie summer points. I still think he can be great (Giro podium wouldn't surprise me) and I'm thoroughly surprised he's only picked twice, but without that 400 point head start he was just too risky with his crash-proneness etc.

For his replacement it was between Rodriguez, Pidcock and Mas (with Gregoire as an outsider). I landed on the one with the biggest upside but biggest risk. In the shuffle I also removed Kielich (shocked that he's a unique pick for @Sneekes ) and got Faure Prost in. I'm a bit sad that I ended up with a 'mainstream' price for my most expensive pick, as I think it looks cool to have my most expensive pick being as cheap as possible.

PIDCOCK Thomas (891 points, 7 picks) - One of seven returnees from my unsuccessful 2023 team. Didn't score a single point post-Tour and his season before that wasn't seen as a resounding success either. Will have a more narrow focus on the things he's actually good at this year, and even if he doesn't do a good Tour GC there are so many Pidcock stages early on in the race. If he just equals his cost by the end of the Tour, he still has the very suitable Olympics (kinda expecting a DNF in the road race after the MTB), he should finally win the Tour of Britain and he'll be an idiot if he doesn't keep it going until Zürich. He might never get a Worlds course that's more suitable for him. At some point he should become a 2000 point rider, let's hope this is the year when it happens.

SHEFFIELD Magnus (573 points, 22 picks) - Positives: Half Norwegian, World class TT, sure to be selected for Olympics+Worlds, out of this world test numbers, crashed in every race in 2023. Negatives: Crashed in every race in 2023.

CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio (496 points, 69 picks)

HAYTER Ethan (476 points, 45 picks)

POOLE Max (382 points, 16 picks)
- Prime example of my new strategy. I have a lot of potential 2022 Skjelmoses on my team, and my thinking is that they're all more or less guaranteed to improve somewhat and not be a frustrating Bouhanni or Ackermann, and some of them will take a massive leap.

TIBERI Antonio (347 points, 15 picks) - Another example. Tiberi was one of the first riders I decided I was gonna take a bet on, and he's been in my team since I started working on it. Quietly becoming the GC star that he's been promising since juniors. He's taking aim at the Giro, and with the TT heavy, somewhat easy route and weak-ish competition, it could be a success story. And of course he has the toolset to score heavy in one-week races.

PLAPP Lucas (341 points, 40 picks)

HAGENES Per Strand (308 points, 20 picks)
- Talked about him in a previous post. I'm a big believer, but he was a rather late inclusion due to the high price.

ONLEY Oscar (302 points, 17 picks) - If I'm betting on Poole, there's not really a good argument to not also go with Onley.

ARENSMAN Thymen (283 points, 64 picks)

MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe (279 points, 60 picks)

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley (262 points, 43 picks)
- I can see why you wouldn't pick him. I also decided early that I was not taking him, but then I changed my mind. He already had the level last year to do a 600 point season with a different scheduleIf, but instead he went crazy with the GT race days in order to build for this season. And he crashed out of some good points in San Juan, too. Let's hope the 'hard miles' strategy works better for Bernal than for Froome.

SEGAERT Alec (198 points, 16 picks) - @Devil's Elbow asked if he can get enough points from TTs, associated GCs in easier races and attacks to make up for the absence of any sprint ability. I think he can. He also climbs surprisingly well. Lotto-Destiny have become good at cheesing a lot of points, and Segaert will probably help with that in easier stage races with a TT. He has looked like a force of nature for a couple of years now without really getting paid for it in big results.

FOSS Tobias Svendsen (197 points, 20 picks) - I guess no rule without exception. He doesn't really have great excuses for sucking in 2023. He has said he didn't find the correct training regimen. But he's only one year removed from a World TT gold, and Ineos are good at getting something out of their TT-ers. A potential disappointment, but also with lots of opportunities.

BUSATTO Francesco (186 points, 16 picks) - I'm really amused that @EvansIsTheBest thought he could be a unique pick. :D One of the first guys on my team sheet. Looks ready to mop up the points in smaller hilly races.

LECERF William Junior (182 points, 13 picks) - Had him last year and he did exactly the Benoot-like final U23 year that I expected. Tiny bit underwhelming in l'Avenir, but surprisingly good on more classics-like courses. Quickstep are really good at getting their neos to score a lot in easy races, too. Looking for a Vansevenant/Schmid type debut year from Lecerf.

PIGANZOLI Davide (177 points, 7 picks) - Also a youngster returning from my 2023 team. Showed a nice development last year, with his late-season Italian classics campaign being particularly impressive. He has good numbers and a good TT, and could maybe even be a Giro surprise. Someone like Mikhels or Turner might turn out better, but Piganzoli is a bit of a fanboy pick. I'd also say he's more likely to double points than Turner or Mikhels, but less likely to triple. I can see a Fortunato-like season coming.

VAN UDEN Casper (177 points, 9 picks) - Actually very underwhelming in 2023, but DSM seem to still believe, and he should have more freedom with the sprinter exodus that has happened there. He was very impressive as an U23 in 2022, so I'm hoping it's a case of an Ackermann-type development where he needs one year of learning among the pros. Together with Foss, he's the one who goes the most against my theme.

LAMPERTI Luke (176 points, 39 picks) - Partly because he might be a very good pick, and partly because I knew he was gonna be popular and it would have been risky not to. He is actually quite unproven against anyone decent, but I guess Quickstep is gonna Quickstep.

GLOAG Thomas (171 points, 33 picks) - His season ended when he got hit by a car in training, but according to some guy on Reddit he is all good despite no official news about him since then. Looked very impressive early season.

MASNADA Fausto (153 points, 10 picks) - Grande Fausto! I might have been swayed by Ilmaestro99.

OLDANI Stefano (136 points, 8 picks) - Really happy that he's so rare. I have a bit of a fetish for riders who can score heavy in the French calendar, and they don't always turn out the way I hope. But Oldani is cheap and has all the tools required.

MORGADO Antonio Tomas (132 points, 37 picks) - All three of the UAE youngsters are really more defensive picks for me. For some or all of them it could be a year too early, but they will all score big at some points, so I couldn't take the risk.

DEL TORO ROMERO Isaac (124 points, 47 picks)

STAUNE-MITTET Johannes (108 points, 53 picks)

RAFFERTY Darren (103 points, 26 picks)
- A bit unsure about how pro-ready he is, but his U23 results are excellent, and I was especially convinced by him having a great TT too. Another case of carpet boming the talent pool for the new De Lie, I guess. That makes more of a difference than whether he scores 80 or 300, which could be the difference between a not-quite-ready neo-pro and a Honoré type pick.

VERGALLITO Luca (101 points, 6 picks) - Surprisingly rare.

CHRISTEN Jan (59 points, 36 picks)

QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander (50 points, 78 picks)

RYAN Archie (45 points, 56 picks)
- Dodgy knees, but with what he has shown, it's worth the risk.

FAURE PROST Alexy (36 points, 14 picks)

LOOCKX Lander (23 points, 2 picks)
- Devastated that he's not a unique pick. Damn you, @Leadbelly ! :D Very excited about Loockx. Has been more of a hobby cyclocrosser with some occasional promising road results, but will now do road cycling full time with Tour de Tietema. Looks fast and strong, and could score very well with their calendar. But I might come to regret picking him over Magnier.

CAPIOT Amaury (10 points, 50 picks)

Fair to say we're probably talking about different levels of potential and performance already, but I took a look at the program and results Michael Leonard had for 2023 and quickly decided against including August and Storm (now August Storm, that's a proper name).

For what it's worth I think it's a really nice, cushioned introduction Leonard had. Really should've had a year in the U23-ranks before moving up.
That's a good point. At the same time Tarling got a much bigger program when in the same seat as Michael Leonard so it's not a forgone conclusion that 18 year olds don't get to race much but I agree it is a risk. I guess it's mainly based on what they are judged to be ready for.

The press release announcing Storm mentioned their "ascent program" for developing younger riders and they do have a handful younger riders now so perhaps they can find a good appropriate program for them all.

The Collective Wisdom team
There were 32 riders selected 23 times or more, but that already bust the budget at 7646. Removing the only rider picked 23 times (Hertzog) would have made precious little difference to that, so instead Carlos Rodriguez, with 24 picks, had to go for the sake of economy. That left 2 spaces, 664 points, and 4 riders on 22 teams to select between. The pairing that came closest to filling that budget allowance was Sheffield and Walls, with Ricitello and Wright missing out on the grounds of unnecessary underspend.

So the team to beat to consider yourself better /luckier than average is:

Here is my team with one unique pick. Hoole's year in 2024
Ayco Bastiaens is totally unknown to me. Anyone know why SQS has signed this guy? Is it a replacement for the Tractor?

I suppose people can still pick him, just like both Sharp and Oss could clearly get picked, he's just not gonna score a lot of points...

Everyone, except for Valgren.
They're not Danish.

Aware of that, but Sharp and Oss will not appear on any start lists. Maybe Sharp will if she feels like a man one day, but unlikely

I picked a rider who I am hoping could score some points, but if he can do De Lie numbers I will only view as a utopia for now.
Gianluca Pollefliet 47 points and picked by 6 teams (mine included) is who I was thinking of, when I wrote this yesterday.

We will see how he goes. He seems to have developed quite rapidly in the last couple of years and if he delivers immediately could turn out to be a good pick. From what I read he seems to be confident in his own ability at least.

THOMAS Benjamin (128) - the one rider for whom I almost broke my non-trackie rule. Got excited when he said he was going to do 40 race days pre-games, but then in an interview a couple of days ago it transpired that it would be almost all WT stage races. Yeah, no.
Haha, wow. Serves me right for not doing my homework.

I only saw this press release:

Didn't even bother to check anything else.

I have a very hard time spotting the new De Lie of the game on my team.
I said I was gonna point out some possible De Lies, so here goes.

Among the cheap riders not in my team, which I posted just above here, I'm most scared of Magnier, Walls, Fredheim, Leo Hayter, Turner and Mikhels. Especially Magnier gives me some De Lie vibes.

Pollefliet is another good candidate for a new De Lie, especially if he wasn't potentially doing track for the Olympics (not sure about this). I also like Persico at Bingoal, but if he really was the real deal, he would probably have been picked up by a bigger team. Fabio Christen (Jan's big brother) at Q36.5 is also a very exciting prospect with a good skillset for the races he'll do a lot of.

On a different note, I'm also curious about some of the unusual signings, like Lemmen, Van den Broek, Van der Lee (there's a proper De Lie candidate for you!). Kepplinger could also take a delayed big step at Bahrain.

It pains me a bit to exclude Moscon for the first time in three years, but I have kinda given up hope. Would love to see him back though. And I tried really hard to convince myself to include Lyu Xianjing, but in the end I couldn't quite justify it.

Jordan Jegat at Total Energies looks exciting as a new Calmejane but is maybe lacking the final few %, and I think Costiou at Arkea is extremely promising. He was just a bit too expensive and there were safer options.

Oh yeah almost forgot! Here's my 2024 team:

This looks very much like how my team could have been if I went the Ayuso route and the safer way of spending the big bucks. I really wonder what Cian will do this year. With his questionable TT, he would need to become an absolute elite climber in order to make a huge profit, but maybe Visma magic can work on all areas. I was a bit put off by looking at his 2023 calendar, which had roughly the same point scoring opportunities as I expect for his 2024 calendar. But he can of course improve sufficiently that he becomes a great pick.

Fair to say we're probably talking about different levels of potential and performance already, but I took a look at the program and results Michael Leonard had for 2023 and quickly decided against including August and Storm (now August Storm, that's a proper name).
Yeah, when making my decision about August, I looked at all the first year U23s' points over the previous seasons, and only Evenepoel and Tarling were must-haves (Costa and Cian were decent). August is not at the level of Cian I think, and will probably be more like Rodriguez, which could still make him a good pick but probably not a game-changer. Nordhagen and Widar could end up being two of the most impressive first year U23s ever, but the history and the points on offer makes me quite confident in not picking them.
