Never in my life did I think I'd have mountain lions on my mind when out riding. But since 2005, I do — quite often.

Good story Granville.

If you lived in Oregon your interest would be justified. Not that they're spotted all the time, but USFS and DFW will freely tell you they are out there and to keep an eye for them on remote roads. I have yet to see any, but others have. Bears too.

Mountain Lion, Puma, Cougar...big cat.
One of these crossed the road in front of me in the middle of the afternoon, probably not more than 30 meters away. Came out of some tall grass and skulked across the road, low to the ground. An awe-inspiring and unmistakble image.

The problem is, they don't "officially" exist in these parts.

bit of an urban legend in the Grampians (mtn ranges the state of Victoria) that there are cougars there. Story goes that they were originally mascots of US military units back in WW2 stationed in Australia, but were just released as quarantine, etc... would make it too hard to ship them home.
I was driving through the area one evening with a mate who is ex-air force and seemed quite adamant about their existance. He's from Victoria, so I thought he was just trying to wind me up (Drop Bear stylee, as he started banging on about them when we were approaching the area) until we saw what looked like a cougar run across the road in front of us.
No way it was a feral cat, which can grow to a large size - it was far too big to be one... This was 1996
cue Twilight Zone theme music...

i saw the talk about the wild cats a few posts above and decided to mention them. unfortunately the Iberian Lynx is at a very high risk of extinction but a lot of institutions are trying to fight it and hopefully they will be able to avoid that disaster.

sorry for the big pics i wanted to show them with good quality

kitties should scratch to dull their own claws. does your kitty have something he likes to scratch at his disposal, not furniture :), but we have a doormat made of coir or similar tough stuff and our cat really goes after it. ..or maybe a chunk of wood if he is an indoor guy --that should help him out!

Our cat loves her scratching post. We replace the rope every year or so because she wears it out. She also uses it as a tool for venting frustration. Many a time she has marched over to tackle the scratching post as if it's a punching bag, then walked away returned to her usual calm. I love seeing her do this.

She uses it and occasionally wooden fences etc to take care of her claws. We never trim them ourselves.

My brother told me last night that it is recommended that all cats, indoor or outdoor, get their claws trimmed every two weeks. Is that true?

Kitty#s have never been trimmed, nor those of the cats we had growing up.

He also said they wouldn't go every two weeks, but would most likely have it done regularly.

speaking of kitty rescue...this woman rescues and trains cats , puts on a show and then puts a few up for adoption during each show stop.
I do not like circuses, but I've read an article about her and she seems like a good thing, they look to be happy cats and all for a good cause.

we are going to see her show this Weds night. :D

Kitty ripped up the pads on her right rear paw. The vet said there was no point in trying to put any kind of bandage on it, so we should keep her in the house until it is healed. She is very much of an outdoor cat and ALWAYS spends the night out.

Saturday she woke us as 4 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Not fun.

Sunday I went to bed at 1 a.m. (incredibly late for me). She woke me at 4:30 and I swear kept on meowing until 6 or so.

She is now sleeping and my husband and I are half-dead for lack of sleep......
