Frankly, I'm blown away that they can stay in business with no low-end bikes available. And, sponsor a fairly strong pro team. Where does the money come from?

The North American market for road bikes tends to be towards the high end with many recreational cyclists being moderately affluent and able to afford expensive bikes. That being said, I bought a 2008 Cervelo R3 with DuraAce for CA$3400 earlier this year. I was very happy with this deal considering that comparable bikes are often twice this price. However, the advertised price for the R3 and R3-SL framesets are now more expensive than my complete bike.

So far:

- Parlee Z4 $3000 USD
- Felt F1 $2600 USD
- Cervelo S2 $3100 USD
- Independant Fabrications SSR $3600 USD
- Colnago CX-1 $3100 USD
- Bianchi 928 Carbon SL ON SALE $2100 USD
- Pegoretti Marcelo $3340 USD
- Look 595 ON SALE $2554 USD
- Cannondale CAAD 9 $799 USD
- Planet X SL Pro Carbon $700 USD
- Pedalforce RS2 $750

I have added a few myself. Please have your say as to what else could go in and what you would take out as there is 11 at the moment and only 10 spots in the poll. I took the BMC out didnt like it as much as the Look 595 which at $2550 is an awesome buy and is my personal favourites at the moment.

Remember we also need a wheel and groupset to go with our frame and accessories (cycle computer, power meter(?), saddle), so that is why i added a few cheaper frames. Because at the moment there is no way we can get Super Rec and an awesome wheels set (ie. Campy Boras, cosmic carbones etc) on for $6000 USD.

So choose wisely. Your thoughts......

Point of order, your honour :p You've assumed that we ALL want Campy SR. Now, beautiful and super-sexy as this is, I for one, could not afford to race and support this groupset. Just for the Record ;)

Another question from a novice: in constructing a dream bike like this, it appears as though the trend would be to put about half our budget on the frame. Is this generally a standard/sensible approach?

My vote is for Bianchi, one of the great classic frame makers. So I'm going for a 928 Carbon SL, must be in Celeste, for about $3000. When the time comes we mustn't ruin a great Italian with Japanese components!!

I vote for the Bianchi! But i plan to "ruin" it with Japanese components :D

Ever been to a triathlon in the US?

It must be close to half of all triathlon bikes in the US are Cervelo. They are BY FAR the most popular bikes for the sport.

Yeah triathlon is their market. And they do make some "low end bikes". The alum. S1 &P2 for instance. $1000 for the S1 frame set. Irregardless, I would vote for the CAAD9 as the best deal for an all round. It's my favorite of the bikes that I own: Cervelo Soloist & Giant TCR 0. It's built up with 7800 Durace and Krysium SL wheels. Very stiff and and an excellant handling bike. "Cannonadale is best bike," as Cippolini was quoted as saying.

I'm not really a Cervelo fan so...................Come on we can't let the Cervelo win!!!!!!!!!!!!:D But you guys wanted it in the poll so it is there.

Cervelo's are the devil

The Look 595 is so sexy.....so vote for it!

***Note to self*** Next time don't put a cervelo in the poll:rolleyes:

I think when you're building a custom bike, there's no right or wrong here. I've just done it, and took exactly the 50/50 option with half my cash going on the frame and forks and half on gruppo and components. I swapped out my wheels which is a luxury that you can afford in the real world but not in our fantasy bike build game. My reasoning was that you can always upgrade components when they wear out if you like. Having said that, I don't race although my peer group includes some cat 1 racers so we end up in some pretty long, hard rides :D

imo, the look is much nicer in white!

I am not a Cervelo fan either. I am sure Thor would choose the Look 595 Ultra he used to ride over the new if he could

Ok. I was the one who suggested the CAAD 9. I still think this is the best frame for the build as it allows us to put on nearly an set of wheels, groupo and a hot finnishing kit.

However, I have voted for the Look because Im sick to death of cervelo's and the strange cult who worship them. I just want something else to win so I dont loose interest in this!

Planet X SL Pro Carbon gets my vote cos.....that's what I ride! :) And at that price you can have your choice of groupset and more importantly wheels.:D

Yeah i agree it would probably be the best choice, but i voted for the look, mainly because at the discounted price it is awesome value. Maybe next time i (or someone else) run one of these if it is successful (would be more sucessful if the general section had the traffic of the professional road race section) we could do specific builds ie. Alu, Titanium, custom or a climbing bike or tt bike or perhaps set budgets for each specific section ie. frame - $1000, groupset - $1000 etc. Anyway the idea of the game is to get people thinking and looking at deals/bargins and just the overall thought processes people go through when building a bike.

Please vote for the LOOK. Cervelos are the DEVIL

Do the El Cheapo bike and build it up to compete against the high-end bikes.

we have a tie! how are we going to sort this out?

I think the only way to end this is to start a new thread with a vote off/poll with just the two of them. I don't really think it is a good idea to start a new thread picking the groupset without knowing what frame we have.

I reakon 3 days only on the thread. 5 or 6 (or whatever we had before is just way too long.)

Pinarello's ?

The choices given are not among the best. Pinarello builds the very best frames available, at a wide price range. Maybe just few can afford the "Prince", but there are other models available at very reasonable pricing. One of the FP series frames coupled with a Campy gruppo and Campy Shamal wheels would be a great choice!
