I'm surprised none of them have looked at Eulálio, though the Portuguese conti scene.. well yeah.
I've read rumors pointing Eulálio to bigger stages than portuguese fallout scene. I've seen his name suggested to Bahrain somewhere on a facebook group.

I can't judge the quality of that source but the truth is that afaik, Eulálio only followed 3 teams on Instagram last time I checked: ABTF Feirense, Caja Rural and Bahrain Victorious.

I've checked now and recently he also followed Antonio Tiberi, new recruit Lenny Martinez and Michele Bartoli (if not contractually linked to the team, at least a trainer of Tiberi and Zambanini).

It's a bit weird, Hubert says he doesn't have the money, but they had an oral agreement with Aranburu and also tried to get Martin... I don't think they can save themselves from relegation anymore. Already behind and it seems with Barré, Louvel (ok didn't score a lot due to his knee injury this season but he is a good rider) and maybe Rodriguez leaving they will get even weaker.
Rodriguez has now been extended for another year. Makes sense, I guess, for both sides.

He was in discussions I think and with TDT but I remember him being already signed during Avenir.

TDT was racing with del Toro in Sibiu, where everyone could see that he is a massive talent. So they probably talked to him - same as most other teams in the race.

At that point, he had not signed a deal yet, so in his regard, there wasn't much scouting from UAE involved indeed.

How much scouting is actually involved though? You just look at the results from l'Avenir and Giro Next Gen etc and have your pick.
Torres was picked up from Sanse, with very little results amongst the juniors showing this sort of level. There are very few races in the Spanish circuit that would suit a lightweight like him, yet they took a gamble on him, gave him a place in the devo team and it worked out.

As far any other youngster in UAE since the generation of Pogacar and McNulty (1998) goes, it has nothing to do with scouting and everything to do with deep pockets.

In this case I think Matxin has probably followed Torres longer than this season though. Done all the groundwork prior to his recent performances. Like firstly signing him for their devo team.

So it is a natural step that he signs his first pro contract with them.

That Torres has shown the level he has this year... it means they might have really gotten their hands on yet another great talent and that other teams are too late on it. Lost out.

Thats where the scouting comes about. Because ultimately you want to find them, build a report and relationship with them long before they become pro.

Like Matxin probably scouted him a couple of years ago. Got in contact with him and his family, while he was still at his local club. I believe that is where his reputation as a scout comes from... that he can find and identify these talents long before they are on anyones radar.

Regarding Maxtin and scouting, I heard LRCP (on Youtube) and the current Wanty scout (irl) say the same thing. Whenever they notice a hidden gem amongst the juniors and/or South-American scene, they always go to either Insta or Strava to shoot him a message, but they always notice there's already one guy following them: Maxtin.
Yes, he has the biggest budget to work with, but he's on top of the game.

Well, that doesn't really prove much either way, other than him very likely simply having much more and much better connections worldwide, than Benji and the chumps at Wanty. The chance that somebody told him to check/follow this or that kid, is more likely than him actually having been scouting and following all those races all over the globe in all those agegroups.

I see your point but being well connected is very much part of being a good scout. I don't believe it is meaningful to seperate the two as rider recruitment is what matters. Performance analyst is a different role.

I see you chose to stretch my "he's on top of the game" into five sentences and somehow manage to include a shot at Wanty whose scouting landed them Bini.

I agree, but him following young riders on Instagram is likely just a result of people who follow a certain region/division much more closely, informing him. The point is that it should not be a surprise that he is aware of these riders before people who are obviously going to be less well connected.

You chose to differentiate between having money and "being on top of the game" while one is very likely a direct result of the other. If he were working for Flanders-Baloise, i doubt he would be getting the same info, or the same people still feeding him info.

And knowing Maxtin, he was already following and talking to Almeida at that time...
I'd hope so. The point here was that him signing Almeida for SQS in 2020 doesn't mean anything in itself about him finding new talent. I also think he was aware of Rodriguez, Uijtdebroeks, or Nordhagen, even though he did not sign them. My previous point, regarding LRCP, was simply that those guys following a "new" talent, are hardly a benchmark.

Perhaps he follows every young rider.
