It's disturbing that Alpecin would be having financial issues, though not surprising. Seems like every team not sponsored by a Petro-state at some point has a crisis. That's just inherent in the business model, frankly.

It wouldn't be terrible if Alpecin and Intermarche merged but you'd just have two shaky sponsors rather than one, no?

IMO Red Bull need make Matthieu an offer he can't refuse, Canyon contract or not.
Mathieu, Remco and Rogla in the same team.....

Lotto was faster than Alpecin to propose a merger with Intermarché

Q36.5 might be interested in Alpecin (but Canyon-VDP is the "problem "there)

I'm reading that the Remco transfer is pretty much done. And that he's considered a legitimate contender for the Tour.

So, what the hell are they watching that the rest of us aren't? I'm sure he can improve a bit more, but he's not coming close to Tadej or Jonas, IMHO.

Maybe Gouvenou and co. aren't happy with the audience drop-off in traditional cycling nations so in order to get them back on board he's going to appease Remco/try to limit the insane time gains of Pogačar's climbs with some serious 90s/early 00s pain, with two 50k+ ITTs, and a whole bunch of tempo grinding at low or mid gradients in the mountain stages where the time gaps can be limited. Expect to see Arcalis, Petit-Saint-Bernard, Envalira, Les Arcs, Tignes, Montagne de la Lure, Pla de Beret and Pourtalet on the menu going forward.

Kidding obviously, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 2009/2012-like experiment in the next couple of years as they try to shake up some interest in the overall race.

August 1st is not a thing anymore in cycling transfers other than to announce immediate transfers that apply for the rest of the season. The new date as of last season was October 15th.

Transfer and registration
2.15.120a Two registration periods exist for the registration of riders with UCI WorldTeams.
UCI CYCLING REGULATIONS
E0725 ROAD RACES 243
The first registration period extends from 1 to 15 August and applies for registrations with
immediate effect during the season.
The second registration period extends from 15 October to 31 December and applies for
the registration of riders as from 1 January of the following year.
The registration periods apply for any rider registration with a UCI WorldTeam, whether
the rider was registered with another team or not at the time of the envisaged
registration.
The provisions in this section (2.15.120a to 2.15.125) apply both to teams which have
UCI WorldTeam status and applicants for a UCI WorldTour licence.

What about stuff that happens before 1/8?

Regarding Kopecky;
Is he the first-ever rider to leave Novo Nordisk in order to sign for a different ProTeam?
They can still sign a valid contract or pre-contract whenever they want, it's just the window for registering it in the UCI.

Regarding Kopecky, I would say he is the only one to ride for another Pro Team since they only employ riders with diabetes. I thought Charles Planet would make the jump but he suddenly stalled and regressed. However, 15 years ago, or so, they had at least Georg Preidler (I also recall Jure Kojcan)

Legitimate contender, not definite winner. And if you don't have Vingegaard or Pogacar, you have to sign one of the next best things. There aren't that many viable alternatives: they already have Lipo, Remco showed in 2024 that he is the "best of the rest" and neither Ayuso nor Almeida are available (though lets all hope Ayuso finds a way out of his contract).

Yeah.

As fans we hear "legitimate contender" and go " are they mad, no one can beat Pogi!", which isn't far off.

But professional athletes are wired a bit differently, they have to think it's much closer than it seems on tv, because that's how they motivate themselves to keep pushing their own limits.

And yes, the teams can only sign the best riders available and give them the best conditions to improve and hope they either closes the gap or Pogi (and Jonas) starts slowing down

Perhaps we need to separate Alpecin the sponsor from the team. Its Decunick that are pulling out of their secondary sponsor role, Fenix and Alpecin are continuing their support and to my knowledge are not 'shakey'.
Ah, interesting, thanks for clarifying. I would think that given MvdP's exposure, as well as Philipsen, that it wouldn't be TOO hard to find a secondary sponsor, but maybe Alpecin is still seen as a "local" team. rather than one with international appeal.

Yes, but Lipo has shown this year that he is the best of the rest, so they don't need Remco

but Megias did it the other way round riding for Saunier Duval first before signing for Novo Nordisk

TBF, it would have been somewhat... complicated for him to ride for Novo Nordisk (or Team Type 1 as they were called then) between 2006 (2005 if we count his stint as a stagiare) and 2007, considering that TT1 only was created in 2008.
What's more impressive is that he rode for Fuji-Servetto (a WT team) in 2009.
