The Great Grand-Tour-Game 2012

Second year running i'm out in the tour, but did better than last year. I'm coming back with a vengeance next year! (And will probably follow it by exiting after the giro :D)

Thanks again for a great contest foxxy!

Well, I'm out. A rather lacklustre title defense, I'll admit. I was pretty lucky to even be in the Tour, through a wild card, so I'll survive. Thanks for a great game, Foxxy, and good luck to all of you who's entering La Vuelta.

Great to see i made it through! I just got back from vacation and i didn't have much acces to internet, i thought i was surely out but i managed to pick up more points than i thought i would. Now let's see about this Vuelta thing, it's going to be hard to pick the winners there imo, even moreso than in the TdF i'm guessing.

Yes, some surprise qualifiers. :)

The deadline for the Vuelta-Picks is on Thursday, August 16th, 18.48 CET. That is 17.48 London-Time, 16.48 "Cycnews-Time", 12.48 NY-Time...

It´s quite confusing with all those different times. ;)

So, Olympics are over. Even if it was farcical many times, still better than nothing. :D
So what we do now?

... ahh, the start lists for the Vuelta are out. So we could do the picks now! Especially when the deadline is only 3 days away.

True. So my aim is to finish 1st. That´s why i started earlier than usual. Again, 51 riders for my Top-20. I´ll go boom or bust.

I was very bad this year with my T-20´s (my strength last year), thus having my worst career outcome at the TdF, so i´d to do some research. Not that it helped, b/c the more names, the more confusion.

Stage wins shouldn't be randomly put out either. 0.5 points for a safe bet is better than a wild guess for some random dude to win from a breakaway. That being said, there's going to be a breakaway win somewhere... and I'm pretty certain I know who is going to win one - but just not sure which stage.

Just a little suggestion, I guess for 2013. I think the number of wildcards compared to the number of direct classifications is way too high. This means it is almost sure the highest global scores qualify no matter if they are European or World. Granted, it means the most deserved players qualify, but that also means the whole group division is useless because top x global players qualify with or without groups.

I also noticed this, you might as well scrap the group division thing in my opinion.

About 2013:

Yeah, the WC was too high, even after the TdF...
OTOH, one division will be boring. I tought more of a like NFL or soccer world cup format (8 divisions)...

I think i´ll do 8 divisions for the Giro, 4 divisions for the TdF and 2 divisions for the Vuelta (where the overall points winner get the Grand Prix, and the runner up from the GP-Winner-Division & the winner of the "weaker" Division share the 2nd Prize).

Of course way less WC qualifiers in each round. Plus i´ll skip the 1/2 points for the riders who made it to the T-30, since it seems to be random to get in there (either by big breaks, or while other riders just don´t care if they finish 24th or 53rd).

Divisions will be done in a group draw. I just don´t know yet how to do that.
Suggestions?

I don't know if I like that tbh. That means one group is much easier to advance from than another, and it's not like you're playing "matches" against people in your group. But you perhaps design a system where such is done, like on each stage the one who guesses the highest finisher gets x points and second in the group gets z points...

But dividing up the groups making it so that your effort could have landed you a spot in the next GT as it is designed now, but in the new system will make it so that if you're in a tough group you're out in the Giro already. I don't know if I like that, it gets more random and bases itself less on actual skill.

sorry for the late entry Foxxy, sent in the picks now though. Picks for Giro and Tour de France were made with a decent reasoning in mind, for this Vuelta it was a total crapshoot in my mind. Hope it works out, especially sprint stages i was clueless. we will see.

The final field of 16 is completed now. Now i just wait for some correction PM´s (replacements for riders not riding), then i´ll put the picks online. That can take some time, since i need some sleep too...
