Yeah Claudio Chiapucci was a junior world champ, multiple senior world champ, and multiple Olympic champ before his rise. Oh wait.......

Are you referring to Wiggins' medals in the:

• Individual Pursuit?
• Team Pursuit?
• Madison?

All well known predictors of climbing prowess.

Anyone else notice this irony in this selection of words?

"Wiggins has sprinkled his preparation for July with an approach to racing that seems to have been lifted straight from the “you might as well win” school of thought. His emphatic win in Bourg-en-Bresse means that he is in pole position to add overall victory at the Dauphiné to an already impressive 2012 haul."

Two cowboys, Marginal Gains and Might As Well Win, walk into a saloon. Both sit down besides each other at the bar. Marginal Gains orders a milk. Might As Well Win asks the bartender for a special jug hidden beneath the bar.

Might As Well Win glances over at his barmate and says, "Hey, pardner, why are you in a saloon. You cannot get drunk with that sissy drink. Try a slug of this." He points to his special jug.

Marginal Gains seems a bit taken aback. "I can't do that. The sheriff banned that stuff years ago. It's illegal. Besides I've got a reputation to uphold.," he says.

With a knowing grin, Might As Well Win sneers, "The sheriff's down at the fishin' hole and all the townsfolk are in church singing songs with that new preacher."

Marginal Gains pauses for a moment then pushes his milk away. "In that case give me some of that and make it a double. I need to make up for lost time."

The more I read this the more tongue-in-cheek it becomes...

"The Dauphiné is only the fifth race Wiggins has started in 2012 as he builds for the Tour de France under the stewardship of Tim Kerrison, his Australian coach, with a training programme that has aroused considerable interest. "

Wiggo goes on to state --- “My coach has not been in cycling for long, he’s come from swimming, so I’ve pretty much been training like the swimmers train,”

well, totally immersed I guess

Now all the pro cyclists will get swimming coaches to go along with their gynecologists.

So we are to believe that Wiggo has an amazing new training technique that allows him to be peaked every day of the racing calendar??

It's the technique Gilbert had last year, he seems to have either forgotten it, or lost it though.

Or, Wigan is just another example of a rider peaking far too early. In fact I actually think it's more of this with a sprinkling of the above.

Given the comparison with Chiapucci, I am interested to know which climbs Wiggins has stormed to victory on?

Just keeping up was victory enough.

Tenerife, looks like an exceptional place to train. I wonder if in North America, areas like Oaxaca Mex., year round or the Grand Tetons/Wyoming in Summertime, or the Alps, Pyrenees or Dolomites, or the Okanagans in B.C. would provide the spiritual and serene, Volcanic oomph to raise the Pro-Cyclists top tier VO2 max.

I don't know about the other places, but training in the Alps, Dolomites or Pyrenees in early season might require a snow plough.

Pushing the snow out of the way is extra training load. Make you strong like bull.

Exactly. In winter, the next option with good infrastructure, high mountains and good weather would be East Coast USA? Even though there is also snow there at altitude. Tenerife is paradise. Never hot, never cold, all possible types of terrain within 150 by 150 km.

I'm not saying there is no doping in Tenerife. I don't see a reason why it should be there specific, compared to dat Austria. And I do see a lot of reasons why one would go there for other dessins.

stating the obvious

One thing is very clear to this observer: Wiggo is the best prepared rider at the Dauph this year, AND he has been consistent all season. How he got there, and stays there is a matter of speculation. It may become a matter of emulation by other teams as well. Maybe all you really need is lots and lots of hard work, good medical and training advise.... and the Murdock Billions won't hurt either.

We've heard all this before. The numerous references I've seen from others of this being "UK Postal" feel highly ironic.

You've got to give it to them, they know how to prep their atheletes.

Finally caught up with this thread and am thinking the Tenerife tourism board is mainly responsible for this thread as now I want to go vacation there, had sites set on the Canary Islands as it is but now its moved up in my vacation spots. Some chit chat as well but still want to go.

That's just ludicrous. You would expect a rider strong enough to possibly win the TdF to be competitive in the spring and of course june. Especially if you're a TT'er and you barely had to climb a speed bump to win those spring races. It's not like he had a really demanding schedule either. Why on earth do you think it's normal to be a world beater for a few weeks and mediocre the rest of the year? It's not.

For the record, I don't trust Wigans at all. Not primarily because of his transformation. I doubt it's reasonable to expect a track specialist to stand out in stage races, regardless of whether he's a very talented stage racer or not. More suspicious is that he's actually faster in prologues now, after training for the TdF and losing weight to improve his climbing. That doesn't make sense. Also, the blood values he published are suspicious and he was dropped by his domestique (Löfkvist) in his first year at Sky.

You should. I was a bit reluctant to go at first, as I thought of it as a retirement home, but the island is absolutely stunning. Nice villages, nature, a vulcano, always good weather, it is unmissable. Gran Canaria is also special, but a bit less spectacular.

The cyclists training bible, which is supposedly one of the most detailed bike racers training guides out there, says that you can't be always near your best level. You have to plan your training so that your body "peaks" for your most important event. And if I remember correctly the book said you could only really have 2 or 3 big peaks per racing season.. I always thought this was how everyone in the world trained, so it's interesting to hear that Bradley now says the key to winning is to simply train really hard all the time... That runs counter to this book, which I thought was the ahem bible on the subject..

I ride my bike 8 hours a day for work, and you don't see me getting any faster.. In fact I feel slower than ever.. Sometimes I feel like I should seriously consider doping just to make life easier!
