As much as I hate to say this, some of armstrong's attacks at luz ardiden (03), alpe d'huez (01) and sestriere (99) were all pretty spectacular.

This year, my favourite might be Gilbert in LBL when he was trying to bridge up to Vino and Kolobnev on the second last climb. True, he blew up and got caught, but he just... destroyed valverde and evans, and halved like a 40 second gap in no time. Devastating.

One of my favourites of all time, although it was more devastating in its guile than in power, was Oscar Friere's first Worlds title. No one knew who he was, everyone was snaking around in the last 1.5km to jockey for position, and he was on the end of the whip and when it pulled off to the side, he just blew across to the other side of the road and won. Awesome.

I didnt say they were clean.

When i say "Greatest clean performance in cycling" i mean "Lance Armstrong Sestriere. Its a forum joke.

oh just don't fucc up this thread too please.no clinic here ombres...

IMO it doesn't matter in regard to this thread of greatest attacks. I mean, doping can be brought into any performance related thread. I agree with jens_attacks . It would be nice IMO to leave doping comments and innuendo to the clinic.

I forget the year and whether is was Beltran or heras, but the year at the bottom of alpe d'huez when the blue train dropped the hammer and the bunch went from about 70 dudes to 5 in about 200 metres. Lance said later on that it was a miscommunication and he was starting to think he was gonna get dropped by his own teammates IIRC?

FFS. Read posts. I didnt make a doping comment
Others did in responce to my post. But i didnt. I reffered to Lances sestriere performance that way, because another poster called "Wonder Lance" has that as his signature, with a link to Armstong sestriere 99. For example look here.

And thanks to you, ive brought the issue back up again and jens will no doubt complain about the thread being hijacked.

Happy now?

Cance's attack on the Mur was one of the wildest I've seen btw

You fool.

That wasnt an attack. Boonen had some problem and evil cancellara took advantage. No one makes an attack on a cobbled climb by sitting. Its impossible. There are some other reasons as well.

Its all in El Pistoleros post on one of the Canc vs Gilbert threads ;)

No offense intended. I've been guilty of the same thing... hijacking threads.
Cheers.

Oh yeah I forgot. Belgian cyclists are the ubermenschen of this earth and everytime they lose it's simply because of some sort of bad luck. How foolish I am. Thanks for El Pistolero for showing us the light

Gesink in Tour de Suisse, Gesink in Montreal

:p duh

I didn't see the Tour de Suisse. But I AGREE 100% with Gesink in Montreal. That was an absolutely fantastic attack - filled with drama.

Cancellera's attacks this yr in RVV, PR and the tour were amazing. Impressive. But you quickly realized the race was over. Barring a crash or mechanical Canca was gonna win.

In Montreal Gesink kept you on the edge of your seat - you never knew if he'd get it. Right to the end there was a chance he'd get caught. And his face, the sheer pain in it was intoxicating. He laid it absolutely all on the line for 10+ km hanging on by a thread, he was an absolute mess on his bike. He looked like he was sprinting for 10km. Exciting stuff.
