Andrei Tschmil going off the front in the 1994 Paris Roubaix and soloing to victory. He kicked the crap out of everyone and even pulled a sweet bunny-hop over a traffic island.

That was bad-ass.

I looked all over the place today for the part where Museeuw almost caught Tchmil in the fianale, only to blow up when he was maybe 20 meters behind him.

I did find this though.... it's just ROUBAIX... and what makes it the best race of the year.

100% agree. How to do the most devastating attack ever:

1. Get back to your DS' car when the field is approaching the final climb to Andorra - Arcalis and have a little talk about your team leader not being in form => Check.

2. Easily pedal back to the front of the group which still contains all of the favorites and lots of their helpers => Check.

3. When the climb starts, up the pace at the front ALL BY YOURSELF (no Guerinis, Beltrans, Rubieras etc. needed) and stretch the large group to one thin chain of world class riders => Check.

4. Have a short look over your shoulder and imagine how great it will feel to ride the rest of the climb all alone clad in your national-champion-jersey => Check.

5. Accelerate => Check.

6. Distance the best climbers of their generation (Virenque, Pantani) - who are working together to catch you - by far over a minute and make it look like an ITT in the flat => Check.

7. Win the stage in style => Check.

Amazing, Still great to watch. Best attack ever. Still enthusiastic about it... I mean, he did all the work all by himself against a huge group of world-class-riders. No train, no help, just sheer power...

This was the first race I watched on TV. On a cold rainy day. I've never heard of pro cycling before. But I was totally fascinated and watched the whole final with Tschmil, Museeuw, Ballerini and so on...

That was a slightly uphill and winding finish, not the same thing either.

Yes, but a mass sprint was predicted :)

I'm not saying it's the same, I never said that? :p

Both great cyclists. There aren't many cyclists like that around anymore which is a shame.

Cancellara's stage win is more impressive as he can hold a higher tempo than Gilbert at flat stages for a longer time, but there are more examples of Gilbert doing something like that making it equally impressive in my book.

I disagree with your last sentence.

As I said earlier in this thread, there are two riders out there (well, one of them in the fridge) who can sustain incredibly high speeds for an incredibly long time on the flat (Cancellara) and uphill (Valverde), and they are on a level of their own.

I like Gilbert more than those two, but until I see him do what Cancellara did at Compiegne or Valverde at Plumelec, against the best riders in the world, I can't consider him on the same level in this regard.

In 2008 people were saying Gilbert couldn't win races longer than 200km... He progressed a lot since then. And well... He did came second in that stage.

And well, he has won a lot of races against the best riders of the world.

Gilbert will be in the Tour next year, you'll see some **** kicking then ;)

That i would have to rank as 1 of the best. Its exactly what you ask for in the title. Doesnt neccesarily have to be a winner, but a guy who just shakes everyone off his wheel.

He goes, and 2 of the best climbers in the world are on his wheel, and its not even that steep, so they are getting some slipstream.

When everyone else would have asked for others to give some help, Mosquera just puts his head down, and CRACKS them both. Both Purito and Nibali, CRACKED by Eze.

i just got shivers all over my body this year at E3 Prijs - Harelbeke....

Cancellara's attack was pure immortality! I just loved the way Boonen and Flecha did everything to get back to him, how Boonen sprints his guts out!
go to youtube and check this video: Cancellara is God. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcNBkQXPFog
You will know what I'm talking about.

Two thumbs down to the music on that one.

Oh yeah, almost forgot Indurain TDF into Liege 95

And Rominger, I think its the Sierra Nevada stage of the Vuelta 94... Duffield on commentary "Rominger's gone up to him.... Rominger's gone past him...", yes it may have been fuelled by sauce but it made Ullrich to Andorra look like a Sunday social.
