Isn't it, though? :) I think he had been aware for some time that Jimenez was tiring, and figured that if he could just store up some extra reserves and unleash it all over the final 200 meters of the climb, he would be able to stay clear all the way down to the finish. Still, I can't think of any other occasion in which I've seen a gap that huge open in so little time.

Contador really opened a big gap on Schleck here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oe7wpDjGHXU

That it takes a special type of rider to take his second pro win at the Worlds.

Does anyone on here remember what the reaction to him winning worlds was? I can't imagine the backlash someone would get now if their second win was worlds. I'm sure plenty of people were worried that the rainbow jersey would barely feature in races the following season.

Don't know if you speak Dutch or French though. VDB said "who the hell was Freire?". And the commentators were laughing at the group of big names behind Freire calling them "sukkelaars"(suckers).

Well, to be fair they did kind of drop the ball. As Hitch said, very smart from Óscar, everybody's snaking and he just stays right over the other side of the road and lets them eye each other up while he gets on with the important business of winning.

Although given various tales from the rest of his career we can also imagine that it all came about because he possibly wasn't paying attention when everybody peeled off to look at one another otherwise he would have followed.

I kid of course.

There should be a thread about his stories. There's this story going around about Freire back when he was still racing in the U23 category. He was racing some race in France and he kept hearing the French supporters yelling "Allez, allez!". So Freire asked the riders in his group who the hell this "Allez" fellow was. He only figured out what the word meant after he attacked solo.

Was that a cobbled climb? (Unfortunately my home race came at the 1 time of the year where I had no access to modern technology.

Yea, and those cobbles seemed a bit kinder to Sagan than the Flemish ones.

...in fact a prominent British mag just after that had a headline along the lines of Oscar Who? and lamented the win by what many considered a no talent nobody...the back story is that up that point he had had a very poor season, appearing in only seven or so races...in fact at the time of those World's he was without a contract ( Liberty Seguros had let his contract lapse which is why he was free to ink a huge deal with Mapei after his win )...and he was very much a last minute and scaping the bottom of the barrel addition to the Spanish team, and the rest is, as they say, history....

...what a story...

...don't want to turn this into an Oscar appreciation thread but could someone post his bunny hop attack across the median in the Tour of Switzerland( if you have access to it )...have only seen it once but the look on his face was priceless, like a little kid who just sneaked off with all the candy...and he just knows nobody can catch him...

...what panache!...what presence of mind!...

Cheers

Surprised if this hasn't been posted already but, hell, worth another watch anyway. I give you Alberto destroying Lance's dreams at Verbier:

Fantastic thread. I just want to point out, though, the significance of this. This attack on Verbier probably had a lot more to do with Contador's current troubles than any Spanish beef. I mean, this attack was a crushing blow against Armstrong in particular. Did you see the look on L.A.'s face after it was launched? Like a man who'd just had all the air sucked out of his soul. And Contador? True champion, victorious!

This attack broke Armstrong's mind long before Verbier.

It was Vitalicio Seguros (Liberty didn't join the sport until later). He had been injured quite a lot in that season too.

Bartoli and VDB trading blows in LBL (Bartoli went way too hard in Fleche). Pantani, pick something... the 1999 Giro was pretty absurd. Johan Meseeuw in the 2000 PR. Cancellara in RvV 2010. thats all I can think of off the top of my head right now.

Thanks for that. Never saw it before and enjoyed it during my ban. That was utterly magnificent.
