If it's a clique why would Evans' "good friends" not support his leadership over Gerrans? There has to be more to it than what appears on the surface.

Back then, Evans was still the perennial loser, and a whiny one at that. Goss still occasionally won a race of some importance. The choice probably didn't seem as absurd as it seems now.
