He has always ahead or the leading group in every race, continental or WT this year. I am afraid something is off here. Could be related to over racing, sick, mental, or still issues with recuperation. But to think that this is his normal level is very silly.
Who said that?

He mailed it in yesterday quite frankly.

He did the final climb in 1'05...

pretty much the slowest of anyone in the race.

You had sprinters doing it 10 minutes faster (albeit they had incentive to beat cut for most part).

I guess it was semi on-purpose to try and go stage hunting.

14 minutes down before? Maybe some of the teams fighting for top 10 dont want him in the break.

Now? No-one will care.

There will be no stage hunting. Not a chance for that. To do stage hunting at the Tour you have to be very strong. Being like this is just a challenge to himself and trying to help the team I guess.

Caracol radio confirmed that he tested positive for Covid-19.
I just don't get it. The professional future of these riders are being defined in the Tour de France. You should protect yourself.
Maybe him and Thomas retire on rest day.

I would say he just as able to contest for a gc as any other rider excluding the top three on current classification.
His original plan this year was aiming to peak for the Vuelta and and not ride Tour, his programme was amended relatively close to the tour.

I didn't say it is his normal level. I said he is not good enough anymore to fight for GC in the Tour. Don't put words in my mouth please.
That is clearer. Thanks. The reason for the confusion was that he lost more than 40 minutes and you were replying to the other person with that sentence.

Anything can happen at any time TBH. I have been surprised so many times in cycling to learn that all predictions should come with grain or rocks of salt. I never saw the fisherman coming as the biggest contender for Pogacar, nor did I see an Slovenian to be the next Merkx. Bernal can retire tomorrow not coping with the new cycling or he can change teams and find a new self.

Who knows!

Good news for Bernal. It appears he didn't get COVID and will be able to stay in the race.

When Bernal made his way through the mixed zone at the start of stage 16 in Gruissan on Tuesday, he found himself debunking rumours that his future in the race was also in doubt due to COVID-19. The Colombian was happy to confirm that he had tested negative for the coronavirus.

"I've just heard the news myself. I didn't know it was out there, but it's false," Bernal said. "It's true that I've had the flu twice during this Tour, but I've done tests and I'm not positive for COVID-19."

Egan to ride the Giro and Vuelta for 2025.
As leader? Or stagehunter?

He's one guy whom I hope can get back to his former level. I don't follow the Colombian sporting press but as far as I know he's never complained, never demanded to be a leader and never blamed anyone since his horrible accident (or even before that with his back injury).

A Giro podium would be fantastic.

There are not many leaders in INEOS anymore TBH.
