His main challenge has been recovery and his mental state. Over the past year, he has shown glimpses of strong performance, but the focus now is on gradually rebuilding his confidence. By the end of the season, it became clear that his struggles were primarily mental, leading Ineos and him to prioritize addressing that first. This year’s schedule has been carefully planned with that in mind.

Let’s hope for the best!

I thought the issue last year was the massive race load.

I still worry if he can ride a three week stage race for GC, however, I can see him winning a GT stage. He should be fine for one week races and please do more one day races.
I agree with you.

His best friend and the media were talking about the back pain again in the 3 week races that he has done. I am not sure about that. In one of his latest podcasts he talked about his mental state of racing and how that is affecting him. INEOS coaches were the ones that brought that up and He said that they were going to work on that. So it could be a little bit of both. We'll see. For sure winning again will boost his confidence level which was low at the end of last year.

Video of the crash. It is not clear because there were some small trees covering the camera. But it shows when it happened.

Fractured Collarbone first official report from Ineos.

If it is just his collarbone, I'm relieved. I thought it was way worse.

Next race is Cataluña.

Going to Colombia now to altitude training. Team and Bernal feel very good about his 7th place after the collarbone break. only regret is the stage that was shortened. It left them without one reference point.

Well, on that last point, it left a lot of riders without the extra reference point. I am not sure if we can just project the results from the Barcelona circuit into the performance of the previous stage. It is a different kind of effort. But what do I know, a lot of people in this forum feel like they already know the results of the Giro.

You think Bernal can be competitive for the win at the Giro? I would be very happy with a top 5 honestly.

I have no idea. But he looked so good at the beginning of the year. And even for a rider just returning from a broken collarbone. I think his only issue was his recovery. His power has been there since last year, but he is not recovering very well. And at that moment he breaks mentally as well. So we don't know. Hopefully he recovers well and gains confidence for the future.
