- He's really happy to be there, he didn't think that he'd wear the white jersey after this stage but he tried his best.
- He's really happy about the fact that he was able to stay with the big boys, 2 years ago he was still watching them on TV, he was almost cryingat the finish line because of the fatigue.
- He liked being a MTBer because he was good at it, but he always wanted to ride on the rode as an U23 rider. He was just looking for an U23 team, but then Androni made him a great offer.
- He was feeling well on the Terminillo and so he attacked with 5km to go, it was a bit too early and he paid for it, but it was a great learning experience and just finishing 1min behind Nairo is good for a young rider like him.
Edit: He signed a 4 year contract with Androni, so he'll still ride with them for the next 2 years, at least if the team will be able to find a new main sponsor.

great engine , great performance.
he needs time to completely develop as a rider, both from physical and technical standpoint.
he is only 20, with very limited experience on road.

androni and savio are not really the best place where to develop.
they makes him run too much ( already 3000 k of racing in this season, san juan , langkawi, TA...) , always pushed to the limit, with very few help.
savio has a 4 year contract and he is going to put a lot of hype on egan ( already last year he revealed his test and vo2 max results, saying that were among the best ever) and he wants him to show all his talent in order to sell his contract for a lot of money.
egan runs the risk to spend to much energy and stagnate....
i am not so unhappy that he cannot ride the giro this year.

egan is a rough diamond , he needs to work o his ITT, on downhill, on positioning in the peloton etc etc.
he has nowbody teaching him the profession in andiron, since pellizotto went away.
savio is good in finding new talents, but he is not famous for working and developin young riders.

he is supposed to prepare himself with bartoli and his manager , paolo alberati is a former mtt professional rider involved in preparing training programs for amateurs.
they both have to show many things in this fields.

i would prefer egan could develop his enormous potential in abetter situation ( orica, saldarriaga, may be movistar, even if they are vey cautious with young riders...)

Torres could be a good mentor for him. I know that Androni hasn't the best reputation when it comes to developing young prospects, but they did a good job with Diego Rosa.

I thought he was tall but is listed as only 174 CM. Is that right?

He doesn't look very tall on that picture.

Also, 174 isn't all that short for Colombians I think.

I'd say. :p

God I hope he will end up and Movistar, trade him for Anacona and Betancur, that seems fair. One Colombia for two Colombians!

Or... keep them all. There's not a limit on how many Colombians a team can have, I think.
Though, signing the entire country might be a bit much. ;)

(Of course, if Betancur doesn't improve drastically they shouldn't keep him)

Torres could be a good mentor for him. I know that Androni hasn't the best reputation when it comes to developing young prospects, but they did a good job with Diego Rosa.

torres has just a couple of season in european cycling with team colombia and corti, not a great reference.
his best season with team colombia has to be credited to j. leguizamo, that prepared him when he revealed at tour san luis.

diego rosa comes from corneliano, a small town 30km from torino, where savio lives. diego was racing for a mountain bike team held by f. bechis, who lives very close to torino . savio was just lucky because of this , and diego is very serious guy, with a lot of work ethic that was taught to him by bechis and diego's family.
diego improved a lot last year with martinelli and when he was with androni savio was trying to build a training structure with some young technicians.
this structure helped diego , but savio let this structure fell down because it costed money.
in other words , diego did not learn that much from savio , that again was lucky ( and clever, too) to find diego and his big engine.
imho, diego is still paying the delay in education at pro level, even if he had good maestros like pellizotti.

imho, egan has less chances than diego, because andiron' s structure is folding.
i think that savio is not motivated in developing egan enormous skills, he is just waiting the right moment to sell his contract.
savio likes very much money, less the riders.
he is not very popular among south americans that have raced with him.

betancur , by the way, is another rider trained by bartoli...

Looks like Bernal is racing at MSR too. Seems like he's had a pretty busy early season schedule for someone so young.

Someone explain to me how doing MSR after so many miles this year is going to be good for him. He needs to leave this team ASAP or they're going to break him for good.

Blame Vegni not Savio. Bernal somehow has to get Androni Giocattoli to the Giro. In the highly unlikely case they manage to get a late-up call he's gonna be massively overraced. Meanwhile teams like CCC and Gazprom haven't even properly started their season yet, did they?

To be fair, Bernal has raced some shitty races like San Juan and Langkawi which is highly comparable to the flat stages of the Abu Dhabi Tour. Just there are many more of them in these races. Its a walk in the park for decent pros to sit in and will most likely be easier than your normal training rides.
