£12m is a lot of money, sets him up for life, he might look at it that if he were to have another nasty crash (he had 2 big ones this year) that could be the end of it for him, so get the contract signed, set his family up for life and he is still so young that he has at least 2 more contracts in him after this if all goes to plan with his career trajectory.
In 5 years he will be 26-27 years old, that is the beginning of the prime years, he could easily sign a 3 year £12m deal then and still sign another at the age of 30, he could be looking at career earnings of £40m plus from riding his bike

NOt knowing the details of that contract, I don't quite understand the rationale behind signing such long term deal from Bernal's POV, because IF he delivers what his massive talent promises, then he'll be worth much more than that by the time big winnings arrive....
