Old news getting confirmed: new, 5-year, £12m deal for Egan with Sky.

hmm

NOt knowing the details of that contract, I don't quite understand the rationale behind signing such long term deal from Bernal's POV, because IF he delivers what his massive talent promises, then he'll be worth much more than that by the time big winnings arrive....

£12m is a lot of money, sets him up for life, he might look at it that if he were to have another nasty crash (he had 2 big ones this year) that could be the end of it for him, so get the contract signed, set his family up for life and he is still so young that he has at least 2 more contracts in him after this if all goes to plan with his career trajectory.

In 5 years he will be 26-27 years old, that is the beginning of the prime years, he could easily sign a 3 year £12m deal then and still sign another at the age of 30, he could be looking at career earnings of £40m plus from riding his bike

Good post.

Anyone with the Tour of California as their biggest win should jump straight at the opportunity to sign a 5-year £12 mill deal.

It just makes sense for all parties involved, he set's himself up for life, never having to worry again about money. Sky get below market value performance for 5 years if he fulfills his promise. Teams have been doing this in other sports for years, especially in US sports where salary caps become involved.

Not including stages the only Colombian to win a WT race so far this season

100% this. Probably the last two riders who were supposed to be the next unbeatable climbers were Andy Schleck and Quintana and while both had a successful career they both didn't achieve anything close what people expected. This contract might as well be seen as incredibly smart in a few years and the worst outcome for him is that he is a multimillionaire but could have earned 5 million more.

As recently as Innsbruck Lappartient made it pretty clear, his plans are still to see the worlds strongest GT riders spread across evenly to all teams in the hope it will make racing more interesting. Clearly if that happens, GT racing will be made more about who the strongest rider is rather than the team. For a team with access to money, now, it makes perfect sense to lock, what many believe will be the best GT rider of his generation into the team in case that happens. If teams strength gets replaced by rider strength, then as a team you want the strongest GT rider in your control for when it happens. In my opinion it's genius. If Lappartients plans don't come to fruition, no problem. If then do, teams become about who has the overall strongest GT rider and that would probably be Bernal in the next couple of years at least.

I agree. For Sky it makes perfect sense to lock what many believe the GT rider who can beat the British stars that come out of their hat.

I just rewatched the Muro di Sormano. I don't think Bernal was in the first 15 on that climb and he was at least half a minute down. No idea how he closed that gap down.

Best descender in the peloton? Amazing how he bridged to Roglic and Nibali, two of the best themselves.
Last year at Trentino, Landa easily reeled him back in on the descent, so I guess he improved a lot since then.

I actually missed the descent due to my dog behaving like a trumpet.

Is it possible they slowed down playing games knowing Roglic and Nibali are elite descenders?

We're gonna base all this on one descent?

When this is asked, the riders themselves always take pains to point out that the best descenders are always sprinters and classics guys. They often call Nibali "very good for a climber". Never "very good".

The problem with sprinters is that we never see them descending, I still remember something like 20 years ago when multiple riders used to say that the stronger descender in the peloton was Cipollini but probably no one has ever seen Cipollini descending skills during a race on TV. Considering that at that time there was a certain Savoldelli able to gain minutes on descents sounded like a joke.

Just an incredible ride for a guy first year at WT and coming off an injury. He's going to be so fun to watch develop the next few years.

Mohoric strikes me as the guy we actually get to see who descends like the guys in the grupetto we are always told are outstanding.

We do get to see Sagan descending sometimes, there was a tour stage where he was second into Gap I think
