To be quite honest this truly is the worst case scenario. This sport will lose all credibility, as little as it still has, if Lance suddenly wins another one. Yes, the American press might write a fairytale, but I believe in Europe this would be Festina levelcredibility loss in the eyes of the general public

I think also in the US they will be very skeptical. Landis claims, his age, the fact that he's shown nothing all year. I think even VeloNews would have a hard time printing glowing stories.

Time will tell.

Funnily enough, I think a lot of cycling followers got rather p*ssed off, when OP covered up the names of Fuentes's footballers, while the footballing world was happy to see it buried.

and you're damn right.
what is so inexplicable for me is why the hell the pro cyclists aren't united at all(i mean it's a hell of a tough sport)?the festina case was the last time when they(better said, some of them) stand up for their rights.look at it now, they all accuse each other, lots of guys from the english speaking countries accusing everyone, italians blasting spaniards, spaniards blasting italians.it's so fuccing wrong.
they don't defend their rights at all.can you imagine some guys waking up rafa nadal,or fabio cannavaro or michael phelps and asking for hair, blood and urine?and by any chance that happens, can you imagine that they will ever made the positive tests public?like the agassi thing.

the only hope and after the tdf 2009 and giro 2010(no positive tests) i may be right is that those who rule cycling finally realised that is better to hide the positive tests.for the last 12 years, cycling was the black sheep for the sport.this must stop.

I think this is one of the major differences between the US and Europe and why it is and will likely remain for a long period of time a mainly continental European sport. The sport in many other countries is built on a few wins or good appearances of individual riders, which over the long run is not sustainable for the sport. I think this is also one of the most damaging things LA has done, built a cult around himself. That way if he falls, so will most of the cycling in the US, which truly is a shame, especially for the teams over there who will get in real heavy weather if LA is found out and it will be a struggle for them to survive.

I don't know if it's fair to judge Lance for that... I think it's more a factor of US sports in general.

Ever since Jordan retired in basketball, it's been about finding the next MJ. Golf tournaments can only survive if Tiger Woods is in the field, because fans don't care otherwise. The last summer olympics were only successful because of the huge fan interest in Michael Phelps.

With the exception of football... and baseball to a lesser degree... individual star power largely drives US athletics. Hockey did well when Gretzky was playing... but it's been in a huge decline ever since (yes... he's not american, but the US adopted him when he came to LA). Same goes with tennis... general fans in the US were interested with McEnroe and Connors... then interest fell off until Sampras and Agassi... and now it's fallen off again.

Heck, even NASCAR (a pure US sport) suffered once Dale Earnhardt died. It's still big in the south east, but it's no longer the next big thing on a nation wide scale.

The US general market is largely based on stars... it's not Lance's fault... it's just what moves the dial here.

US cycling fans will be skeptical.

US fans of football and baseball who don't know a cyclist other then Lance will eat it up.

It's not likely to happen though, so it's all fairly unimportant.

I think most Americans and Europeans are Lance fans. I am glad that people on this forum can express their opinions but for most, the sportsmen and fans like Lance. I actually believe what most of the what the haters on this forum (as well as Floyd Manzano, Becky Greg and Davide Walsh)say but I will be rooting for Lance and Contador.
I won't troll to get a rebutal from the haters. My opinion only.
But hey haters. get with Frodo,Bidet, Andy Schleck.and peloton up to Dr. Evil's Lair and find your bottle of mojo.
You are running out of steam with 2 weeks before the worlds' 3rd most important sporting event.(my Lord quoted that.)

Please don't take me as a hater, although I cannot stand Lance, this mainly comes from two factors. First the media's hard-on for him, which is really annoying and really does not do credit to the other riders. Two the way he acts, this is in his bussiness aspect of live, as well as the manner in which he acts against those who oppose him. But against him as a cyclist I am rather neutral.
But I am not of the opinion that most Europeans are Lance fans, I think it is more common for them to be the opposite. From memory the most loved cyclist during the Lance-era tours was Ullrich, everybody was rooting for him. In my opinion most Euro fans don't like Lance that much, it's mainly the media

You are probably right. I consider the Europeans to be more highly cultured and sophisticated in most ways including sport. I do not buy into Lances PR onslaght either. Please I am not trolling, warning. I see him as a winner and someone who overcomes adversity. CC Livestrong public stratagies I ignore. I can learn from him. Now it is age. I see down the road he will be investigated, I want to see how he handles that. Truly a fascinating character, hate him or love him.

Hmm. The cultural diversity in Europe is staggering so I would avoid using the term as a collective. And I also think you are wrong in your thinking:(

I am selectivley choosing the culture of Europe I would prefer to associate with.
Simply my own opinion, the groups who I choose.
Every country I have visited, the people know more about what is going on globally then in the USA. Over here people think the world and the universe revolves around them.
That is why I like to travel.

A question for all to ponder:

Cycling and cycle racing is beautiful, more beautiful than words give me the ability to convey. But there is a darkness to it, of which doping is only a (large) part, but not its entirety.

Would I/we feel the same way about it without the dark element?

I don't have an answer, only a question.

I think I know where you are coming from but I don't think it is simply doping that makes it dark. I can't put my finger on it either but the feeling probably stems from the fact that every pro has not lived a normal life that you or I could undestand to get to where they are. Maybe that is the mystique? I don't know.

Reminds me of when Lance tried to go deep on Verbier last year and just came up blank. Comedy is not your forte.

Only if you can worship lance like a god 1st, and then view any criticism as blasphemy.

And a sense of humor is definitely not at all acceptable.

Besides, your mom called, she said you can't stay there.
