the field clearly wasnt as strong as last years. so it would of been much easier to finish third in 1976. lance probably would of got the victory in 1976 but that is neither here nor there.

Lance was only 4 in 1976 so I would seriously doubt it.

Personally I thought the field and the course were both quite weak last year.

Lance is a very special athlete and the greatest cyclist of all time.

Yes, you are correct. It's funny how some people believe that despite winning the tour seven times, something that will never be repaeted, he is still not the greatest ever. I mean he won the tour SEVEN TIMES. The best ever.

Merckx was riding in the Tour last year? Man, that guy is great.

We had a thread about that......We all agreed that Lance Armstrong was the greatest of all time. Merxx didnt even nail that many chicks.

There were 7 mountain stages back to back in the 1976 TdF (probably why the sublime van Impe won it - a true climber). I doubt very much that 37 year old Armstrong would have been anywhere near the podium in that race on his 2009 climbing form.

On an unrelated note, I've just watched the highlights of stage one of the Tour of Murcia, and although I didn't understand much of the commentary,it was interesting to note that the same fixation on armstrong that other english language coverage is accused of, was just as prevalent, if not more so.

I think it's pretty understandable.

The guy won 7 Tour de Frances. (Tours de France?) While he's clearly past his prime and is no longer the best cyclist... he's the closest thing to a "legend" riding actively.

If Miguel Indurain had come back in 2001 as a 37 year old and said he was going to try to win a 6th Tour against 2-time champion Lance Armstrong... he would have gotten more coverage then Lance. Because at that point... he was the legend, and Lance was the relative newcomer. He would have gotten the lions share of the media attention in the other races he rode as well.

Not disagreeing with any of that. I'm suggesting some of the posts on english commentary bias, and liggett and sherwin being up lances a#se might not be so accurate.

Did you watch Versus coverage at the Tour last year?

'Kurtinscs' post is excellent. Lance is probably the biggest name in Murcia at the moment so naturally gets a lot of exposure - but there was little mention of him in the commentary although he got quite a bit of TV time.
It was the opposite on Versus - fair bit of TV time - but mentioned every 5 minutes.

I'm not sure if what i watched was the versus coverage,it was mostly liggett and sherwin commentating,so probably. I didn't find it all that extreme, no more than those murcia highlights.Although I mostly saw only the racing, notmuch build up, post stage type thing.I thought there was more armstrong on the murcia highlights than the Tour down Under highlights.I suspect when you dislike seeing him,or hearing his name,it seems far worse to you than if you're more neutral.

It is the content of their words, not the quantity. While Phil and Paul talk endless about how Armstrong walks on water the rest of the world is saying Douchebag, Douchebag, Douchebag.

Well, you're suspicion is wrong.

Obviously LA is going to get a lot of airtime on US coverage, like Versus. And Liggett & Sherwen have always supported 'the English speaking riders' which is very understandable. I have no problem with post or pre stage analysis - he is the big draw after all and in particular for the US market.

However, Sherwen in particular could not go more than a few sentences with mentioning his name - I found that frustrating and very shortsighted on Vs coverage. When LA retired in 05 Vs viewership plummeted, LA is the current draw but to keep a keen interest in the sport they should have covered more 'English speaking' riders and in particular other races.

the Cycle Sport magazine article on his comeback is an interesting alternative perspective to read "Hit or Miss"

i think his treatment of contador during the TDF 09 and other petty fights did reek of primary school bully mentality, he needs to grow up in that regard. but we all have our flaws... and he did very well to get on the podium.

LA criticising Contador "Lots to Learn" for bonking in the Paris Nice....how quickly LA forgets he did exactly the same at the Tour, on the stage up Joux Plane....

contador let his legs do the talking on Verbier to show who was the best. and when that happened....well no one else could respond.

As is always the way with cycling, Legs talk louder than any words. Or freakin' Twitter nonsense......

Armstrong is not just big in America, people all over the world want to find out what he is doing. Eurosport are running Planet Armstrong again this year. Tonight we got short footage of the stage, interview with Lance, him leaving the hotel, an interview with his bodyguard.

The fans are treating him pretty well in Spain.
