not taking any sides here and i really dont care one way or another, but the original decision to forgo the giro (and some other italian races) almost certainly belonged to bruyneel/armstrong.

as usual, if one wants to figure out jb/la spin it is best to not take there word too seriously. eki said months ago that the shack was prepared to deal with the consequences of not riding the giro and planning other races.

I sometimes wonder why The Shack went to the expense of setting a roster of 25 riders.
With only a cursory interest in the classics and none at all in the Giro or Vuelta, they are like a part time outfit.
They could have ridden the season with 14 guys and a fat old man.

lancearmstrong Interesting 2 read that @teamradioshack not selected 4 the Giro. Unrelated - guess they got our letter Jan 23 saying we wouldn't be coming.

What is wrong with Lances' tweet? Were the gilted fan boys'+(haters) dissappointed that Lance and Radioshack chose not to participate in the Giro.

The fanboys and Lance haters must someday realize that the universe does not revolve around Planet Armstrong.

Possible explanation: Jan 23 letter about "we wouldn't be coming" might have referred to only LA as "we".

This is getting really pathetic.

A busy, but exciting week lies ahead! I know everyone is looking forward to the Critérium International and seeing Lance and Alberto race together for the first time this year. I wouldn't necessarily call it a preview to July because Lance isn't at his peak form, ...

http://www.johanbruyneel.com/blog.html

Note the missing "yet". That is, he did NOT say, "Lance is not YET at his peak form", which would have implied he's on his way to being in peak form. Is this a Freudian slip indicating JB too has seen the writing on the wall? How could they not?

Considering they are following a script, Freudian implications have already been sanitized. At least Bruyneel's job isn't dependent on Lance actually being fit, unless Radioshack's money is performance based. Michelob Ultra will be happy as long as a Texan is drinking that sh*tty beer, since cycling isn't a sport to them anyway.

Sounds to me like Bruyneels' trying to get as much"spin and bling" out of Conti and Lance as possible. Is he taking lessons from Don King?

You got that right. They're making money off of a "brand", not the actual performance.

How about this from the same Hog blog?

Over the last few months, I've really seen the power that the fans hold. One clear example - Over $135,000 raised for LIVESTRONG and World Bicycle Relief thanks to people spreading The Fat Cyclist's message.

Is anyone else starting to wonder if this gut isn't some strange and pathetic ploy to try to lure Contador into a false sense of security? Not that it would make a difference to Contador what level of fitness Armstrong brought to France. The photos from South Africa didn't look like a real belly to me. Just wondering... can Armstrong really have forgotten how to commit to the TDF overnight? I must be bored and looking for a conspiracy theory.

Surely it's not surprising that most professional "sports", certainly cycling, are primarily entertainment products, and athletic competition is a secondary purpose.

Not to say that pro cycling is quite the charade that "pro wrestling" is, but they're cousins on the same continuum.

Contador doesn't care about Lance or Bruyneel. Everyone knows this, and he's made it clear. The only people trying to build up the rivalry are in the Lance camp. Everyone else with a TV saw Contador smoking Lance faster than a joint at a Dead concert last July.

Such a shame we won't have the Giro to look forward to next year - after all, we all know that a professional bike race can't survive without Armstrong in it and the Italians will be switching off in droves now they know he won't be there

I think everything they say and do is for some ulterior purpose. And the rest of the cycling world seems to be not-so-slowly moving past and away from their little twitter world.

This week's upcoming 'showdown' won't be so much about Astana/AC versus Shack/LA as it is the Shack trying to establish relevance to the whole peloton. We will know soon.

Wow, he's still getting paid dividends from the bluff of 2001. I doubt anyone he'll have to race will buy it, but his fans sure will.

(by no means suggesting you believe one way or the other, pedaling squares.)

Hope I didn't develop a conscience for how I achieved much of my 'success' both sporting and financially.

+1000. Become an ambassador to the sport and move on with raising my family. He could still make a ton of dough in sponsorship deals (ask Michael Jordan).

Yeah, the Fat Cyclist holds some pretty good contests. You have to keep checking his blog as they come up quickly.

Hmm. For a second the Lipitor ad that got posted seemed relevant to the LA thread until I realized it was really spam...

Me too. If it didn't take up so much space, I would have kept it. Strangely appropriate....and humorous. :D
