épouse can also just be used for "partner". I was often called my g/f's "épouse" and "gendre" ("son in law") over there at Christmas, but that's just the way they say things over there.

At least that's what I was told anyway...

épouse = wife

If in doubt as to actual marital status, the more generic term "femme" can be used.

In this case "sosie" would have been more accurate, given a certain resemblance.

Hmm... could it be a regional thing or do I need to have words with the other half, just to confirm that we're not actually married?!

The Postal/Disco TEAM controlled the TdF from the 1999 Passage du Gois to the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in 2005. 7 consectutive years, all in a row, back to back to back to back to back to back to back GRRRRR.

As Alberto wins his 2nd in a row this year, it will be a chance to reflect on the greatness and almost impossible awesomeness of THE SEVEN.

That was "THE STREAK" in ALL of Sports, not just Cycling.
C'mon, what other sports streak even comes close?
Nada.
Crickets.

Ever hear of a guy named Edwin Moses? Almost 10 years without a single loss in the 400m Hurdles. 122 races.

I'm not suggesting that Lance's 7 aren't praise worthy as a great streak in all of sports, I'm just refuting your claim that it's THE STREAK in ALL sports.

And Moses was the most beautiful hurdler to watch too.

I think Armstrong's winning streak might have been just a teensy bit more impressive if he'd raced more than those 21 days in July. The lack of even an attempt at the Double is shocking. Compared to Indurain's 5 TdF including 2 Giro/TdF doubles, 7 in a row when you hardly ever race is not quite so impressive - can you imagine how many Merckx would have won if he'd been so selective? It's like saying Moses only raced 1 race a year throughout his streak.

Then in the sport of squash we have Jahangir Khan. For five years and over 500 matches Jahangir repelled every other squash player.

I forgot you don't know about squash in the USA - you play some game with a big pink fluffy ball and girly bats.

Australians know a bit about it however.

Wait, were you being serious?

Yes, but if you have never played it you wouldn't understand. UK probably has more squash players than racing cyclists.

Squash professionals are very serious athletes. Check it out.

Fartstrong could take it up when he retires again :D

7 maillot jaune as 'The Mother of All Streaks'? What a joke. I present the following:

13. The number of years that Cambridge beat Oxford at 'The Boat Race' on the Thames, from 1924-1936. Granted the boats did not contain the same group of academic underachievers pursuing the rather noble concept of a 13 year undergraduate degree, but neither did Lance have the same crew of 'enhanced' domestiques for his seven.

63. The number of undefeated matches where Capablanca never lost a game of chess. 40 wins, 23 draws, 0 losses. Did Capablanca ever enter a competition just to get a little training in like Lance does all the time except for July? Hell no. He wanted to stomp on the throats of every opponent in the theatre of war that is the chess board.

79. The number of Star Trek episodes in which Captain James T. Kirk was never diagnosed with an Intergalactic STD.

UConn women at 72 wins (and the verge of 2 perfect SEASONS in a row, a perfect season for lance is just 1 tdf win) and they are closing on the all time NCAA b-ball streak of John Wooden's UCLA teams' 88 wins of the late 60's.

Polish does need some perspective.

How about Edwin Moses' 122 straight race wins over a ten year span in the 400m hurdles?

How about a 13-year undefeated winning streak of 87 bouts for boxer Julio César Chávez?

Not much of a fan of cricket but here is the biggest one:

555 matches — Jahangir Khan
Streak started 1981 (defeated Geoff Hunt)
Streak ended 1986 (ended by Ross Norman)
Note: This is the longest winning streak in sports history (in number of wins).

You're clearly not a fan of cricket or squash for that matter as Jahangir Khan was a squash player!!!

Hurdles?
Squash?
Cricket?
Croquet?
Lacrosse?

C'mon, hardly need to pack your Suitcase of Courage for those.
Probably could get by with a Man Purse.

I'm sure a lot of people (outside of here, of course) would say that about cycling.

You are truly an idiot! If you've ever run 400m, you would know you're talking about an amazing performance. Any streak, no matter what the discipline, is amazing because it not only requires talent and skills, but amazing mental preparation to maintain that intensity and training and attitude. Much has been said of this for Armstrong, but any of the streaks by individual athletes below make Armstrong;s 7 TdFs pale in comparison, especially considering these are performances done throughout the year (not 3 weeks of the year) and without the support and protection of a team.

Athletics
Edwin Moses: 122 consecutive wins in the 400m hurdles over 10 years
Sergey Bubka: 6 consecutive World Championships in pole vaulting
Iolanda Balaş: Undefeated in women's high jump over an 11-year period and 140 competitions, including 2 Olympic gold medals and 14 world records

Baseball
Orel Hershiser: 59 consecutive scoreless innings
Joe Dimaggio: 56 consecutive games with a hit
Cal Ripken Jr: 2,632 consecutive games played

Boxing
Julio César Chávez: Undefeated for 13 years and 87 boxing matches
Jimmy Wilde: Undefeated in 103 boxing matches over 5 years
Pedro Carrasco: Undefeated in 93 boxing matches over 8 years
Félix Savón: Won six consecutive World Championships and 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals in heavy weight boxing
Sugar Ray Robinson: Undefeated in 91 boxing matches over 8 years

Football (American)
Johnny Unitas: 47 consecutive games with a touch down pass

Golf
Byron Nelson: 11 consecutive PGA wins

Hockey
Wayne Gretzky: 51 consecutive games with a point

Motor Sports
Michael Schumacher: 7 straight F1 wins
Sébastien Loeb: 6 consecutive rally World Championship wins (and counting)

Rowing
Steven Redgrave: 5 consecutive Olympic gold medals in rowing

Skating
Sonja Henie: 10 consecutive wins in the World Figure Skating Championships
Hjallis Andersen: 53 consecutive wins in the 5000m long track speed skating over 5 years
Wang Meng: 83 consecutive wins in 500m short track speed skating over 4 years

Squash
Jahangir Khan: Undefeated in 555 squash matches over 5 years (longest winning streak in any sport)

Tennis
Esther Vergeer: Undefeated in 383 matches (and counting) in wheel chair tennis (since 2003)
Martina Navratilova: 74 consecutive wins in professional tennis

Wrestling
Alexei Karelin: Undefeated streak in Greco-Roman wrestling (including 3 Olympic gold medals and 9 World Championships) over 13 years
Osamu Watanabe: 164 consecutive wins in freestyle wrestling (and the only wrestler to be undefeated throughout his career)
Cael Sanderson: 159 consecutive wins in NCAA wrestling (undefeated in collegiate career)
Futabayama Sadaji: 69 consecutive wins in sumo wrestling over 3 years

There's a big difference between track and field, boxing and cycling in terms of media coverage and general overall interest shown by the general public.

First of all, boxing has different weight classes. When there are good heavyweights fighting, they tend to dominate the sport in terms of coverage but that weight class is currently dead. There are still other weight classes that can capture one's imagination.

Two, track and field has many different disciplines with again, more choices.

Pro cycling, for the average fan, is about one race and one race only-the Tour de France. Lance dominating this one race and then taking the rest of the cycling calendar year off is not all that impressive in comparison to other streaks in sports.

Throw in how he achieved his feat and the accomplishment loses quite a bit of it's luster, that's if you're a pragmatic thinker and not some blithering, drooling, unrepentant fanboy.

Apparently you have never tried to play lacrosse it is a he man mens game. Think ice hockey on grass with almost no padding and a hard rubber ball that can be fired very accurately at almost 100 mph. Oh yeah and between bruises you run and run and run, as much as soccer.
Squash will likewise send you home with dozens of little round bruises, and is a very high skill level game.
Cricket and Croquet are um......are...... well I guess you are like the monkey and the typewriter, give you long enough and you come up with something profound.
