that first Barca goal seemed miles off-side, yet Wenger didn't even protest.
Did I see it wrong? (I only saw replays)

Tomorrow's Sunday Times will break a series of doping allegations that implicate Premier League footballers among others. The story will lead tomorrow's front page, and alleges that 150 sportspeople have been prescribed Performance Enhancing Drugs. It is believed that this list includes players currently playing in the Premier League.

Just posting for information, not a clinic discussion.

Strange classico. Real approched the game like a small club in terms of tactics and were hungrier and more up to the game. Thus they deserved to win it. Huge win for Zidane as a manager, Casemiro justified his trust big time.

Barca on the other hand were lacklustre, they lacked fire and agression required for such a game. They almost looked like they were happy with a draw, not like a team playing in a huge derby.

Worst of all on the pitch was the referee though. Weak and inconsistent, he screwed over both teams. In the end his failure to send off Ramos inside the first 30 minutes influenced the end result more than the cancellation of Bale's perfectly legal goal.

t

And just to add, Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester and Birmingham players have gone to him.

Cracking Clasico. I am more favored towards Barca than Real and am generally sympathetic to catalan nationalism, but I found myself wanting Real to win after Bale's disallowed goal.

The ref was a joke though. Messi should have had a free kick, Ramos sent off in the first half, Bale's goal should have been allowed.

Real won deservedly in the end because they were more clinical. Barca couldn't take their chances. I mean, Suarez missing that tap in in the beginning is one of the worst misses of his career, and MSN weren't even close to firing on all cylinders. Busquets and Alves for me were the only Barca player playing to their expected high standards. For Real, Navas was immense, as was Pepe barring letting Pique getting in front of him and scoring humiliatingly. Bale had a good game, Marcelo was excellent (even defensively not getting caught out too much), Casemiro immense in that holding midfield role. Ronaldo was so composed in the final moments. What a moment to score a winner at the Camp Nou.

They should be getting to the semis at least in the CL now, the title is long gone. I hope this gives Zizou some leverage to stay as manager. He proved himself stronger than Perez at this moment in not forcing himself to select James like Benitez did. Zizou is learning at the job and is getting better and better and will, given a proper shot to build his own squad and tactics, be a success. Florentino Perez needs to take his hands off though.

good analysis.

As you say, a red card should have been given. I'm always annoyed by that, because it's a game changer. You could say, Bale's disallowed goal cancels it out, but the red card would've been in the first half, so it would have been an early game changer, and then we wouldn't even be talking about Bale's disallowed goal. That said, like you, I'm happy with Madrid's win. I've grown so tired of Barca's dominance.

Ronaldo is always fun to watch if he's in good shape, mainly because he's so painful to watch when he's in bad shape.

Messi is a fantastic footballer, possibly the most effective/influential player to have ever lived.
But I don't find him the most elegant to watch. I came to that conclusion re-watching some Johan Cruyff footage. Other things equal, I find tall footballers are more elegant to watch.
And so I find, say, Fernando Torres (when in shape) to be much more elegant than Griezmann. Or Yaya Toure more interesting to watch than Xavi/Iniesta.
All a matter of taste of course.

Yaya Toure more interesting than Xavi/Iniesta? Ok. Difference of opinion. I hope you aren't claiming that he's more elegant though, because that, he definitely isn't.

Ronaldo is the perfect footballing specimen. If you were to design a footballer in a laboratory, he would be the end result.

On the topic of height:
Xavi is 1.70, Iniesta 1.71, Scholes 1.68, Silva 1.70, Mata 1.70... I guess you make a compelling case, lol.

1.77m small?

Maybe in US sports. 1.77 is bang on average for a European male and for midfield players.

Pirlo's replacement in the Italy squad, Verrati, now that is a small midfielder.

Verratti is 1.65m, but isn't usually as elegant as Pirlo. He can be on that ball, he just often turns into a scrappy pit bull of the ball, which is definitely a good thing as it means he has the thing Pirlo lacked when he was at his best. Verratti will be better than Pirlo ever was in 3 or 4 years time, I believe. Pirlo is just slightly below average height for a midfielder. Insigne is probably the smallest player I know, and is elegant and very talented but stands at 1.63.

Fifa could face another crisis after the Panama Papers revealed an apparent conflict of interest at the heart of the ethics committee supposed to clean it up.

The documents – part of a huge data leak from the law firm Mossack Fonseca, which helps clients set up companies in offshore tax regimes – show links between Juan Pedro Damiani, a Uruguayan lawyer and long-serving member of the ethics committee, and Eugenio Figueredo, a former senior Fifa vice-president recently accused of corruption, are far more extensive than previously known.

The files could threaten to undermine the credibility of the ethics committee, which is central to attempts to show Fifa is willing to reform after decades of corruption allegations.
