My favourite team Borussia Dortmund just won the German championship for the second time in a row. Amazing season once again. Next goals are the record for most points scored in one season and the DFB Pokal!!
I have a bit of a soft spot for Dortmund (however, my German team has always been Eintracht Frankfurt, but they're not so good these days. Still, looks like they're going to be promoted back to the 1. Bundesliga where they belong, in the automatic promotion slots at the moment). Surely the next plan is to bring back the glory days of '97, but preferably without the cornea-scorching Vini Caldirola-styled shirts.

Eintracht had a weird season last year, being pretty good in the first round but then sucking in the second round. I don't want to blame it all on Michael Skibbe but I never liked the guy (he started his trainer career with Dortmund). I'm not going to lie - it was difficult to be a Dortmund fan after Hitzfeld and before Klopp, and I did not follow them as closely during that time as I do now. Even during the time of Matthias Sammer I did not identify with the trainer or the team. But now they are a bunch of very sympathetic youngsters and they are fascinating football fans across Germany and Europe. I think they really have something unique going right now, this is the golden age of football in Dortmund right now. Even though they will not win the Champions League, it is even better than '95-'97 because these are players that either come from the own youth or were "bought" really young, before they were anywhere near famous. Bayern München has the better individual players but this is surely the best team in Germany right now. Honestly I don't even care if they win the DFB Pokal or not, this has already been an exceptional season.

I am not surprised at your softspot for Eintracht Frankfurt, since you once revealed your favourite race to be Rund um den Finanzplatz. To be honest I haven't followed the 2nd Bundesliga so much in recent years, partially because it is already difficult enough to get decent coverage of the 1st Bundesliga in France. This year I'm glad Fürth made it and I'm always rooting for clubs from the north/east because there are not many of them in the 1st Bundesliga, thus I root for St. Pauli and Union Berlin for example. Too bad that Rostock might go to the 3rd Liga... :( I am not in favour of the new relegation system, as I always found it interesting to discover new teams such as Augsburg this year or Unterhaching and Ulm in years past. Therefore I'm hoping Paderborn will make it. But I do acknowledge that it was good for Gladbach to stay in 1st Bundesliga, what a great season they've had.

Next year the lost son will be back in Dortmund. An attack with Kagawa, Götze and Reus, plus Perisic, Blaszcikowski and Grosskreutz... that will be amazing.

I dont know so much about soccer (football), but I have recently started to watch a lot more of it. I have played a lot of soccer but I never really bothered to pay any attention to the pros. I know there are some important games coming up though. Bayern vs Real and barca vs chelsea. I think Real will win and Barcelona will win. Although I will say Bayern is pretty hard to play against with Robben and Ribery on the wings. They are both insanely fast. And then Gomez up front to put away anything that gets near the goal. (although I wish they had a more well rounded striker up front like van persie). I'm trying to decide what team I should be a fanboy for... hmm any suggestions?

saint mirren :S..... well I think bayern wouldnt be a bad choice the german league is a bit more financially ethical than the other leagues I think teams there need to be running well to get a license for the bundesliga so they dont spend money they dont have... although bayern are just a huge business but at least they are not funded by sugar daddies or the spanish government :S.. bayern is also easy to follow for international fellows and has entertaining players like ribery and robben... although it seems most germans dont like them :S

an english team is probably the easiest one to follow though :S

I think Chelsea are going to win the cl :S and finish outside the top 4 in england... just like liverpool did.. Munich will be hard to beat if they make it to the final seing as it is in munich... With their defence I think they will have a tough time beating real but I hope they can do it.

Yes in Germany there is a rule that one person cannot own more than 49% of the club I believe. The only one that has a sugardaddy like Abramovich and others is Hoffenheim, but at a much smaller scale. Then there is Wolfsburg and Leverkusen who are very closely linked to big companies (VW and Bayer) but again they spend relatively little money compared to other international clubs.

Bayern München has by far the largest budget but it's largely their own merit. They can look back on decades of complete dominance in Germany so they always got by far the biggest sponsors, TV money, prize money... Plus they rarely buy international stars for huge sums, their strategy was always to buy the best German players like Kahn, Effenberg, Ballack and more recently Podolski, Gomez and Neuer. Now it appears this is changing, with Marco Reus chosing Dortmund over them. But those players are very affordable for Bayern. In addition they have a very good group from their own youth like Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Badstuber and Müller.

I am not sure but I think they are the only club at European top level that is not in a lot of debt, even on the contrary, who actually makes money. Of course their budget is much smaller then Chelsea, Madrid, Barcelona etc. and that makes the fact that they can compete at the same level as those teams all the more impressive.

So on an international level I always root for them, and I think it is the same for a lot of Germans. Palmerq said he thinks most Germans don't like them - yes and no. In the Bundesliga, everyone is happy when they lose and when they don't win the title, because most people are bored with their dominance. They also have the reputation of being quite arrogant, which is underlined by their motto "mia san mia" (we are we). But then when it comes to the Champions League most Germans rally behind Munich and support them because they are usually the only German team who can get that far. At least that's my impression!

So I hope they will beat Madrid and I believe they can!

Thanks for the input. Well I think i'd better choose soon with the season finishing up. Does anyone support Man U or Man City? They are pretty damn good teams also.

No, no dude (or as they say in London, 'mate'), you can't pick one of those glory-hunter teams! Would you want to support the football equivalent of 'them damn Yankees'? Of course, you wouldn't.;)

You want to support a long-suffering team with a great and noble history, a bit like say, the Skins. You want to support West Ham United, the pride of East London!:D

You could do worse than share the secret passion of the President. Yes, it's true. See for yourself - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2290252/Up-the-Irons-Barack-Obama-is-West-Ham-fan.html

Instead of 'rah' or 'go team', we yell 'Come on you Irons' to encourage the lads, we sing 'I'm forever blowing bubbles', and the traveling faithful chant 'We are West Ham's Claret and Blue Army' which, admittedly, is a bit of a mouthful, but it is what it is.;)

I see. :)
Reminds me of "Asterix and the Goths":
"Let's go east, to the Visigoths!" (it admittedly only works in German, where they're called Westgoten)

Games like this are exactly why I understand those who dont like soccer. Negativity and pure luck wins out, the equivilant of those races where everyone sits on Cancellara.

What a match. Crazy. Brilliant entertainment although seriously annoyed about the result. :p

Chelsea limps into the finals with four suspended players...

barcelona had all the chances to win this match, with various chances, a red card (deservedly) for Terry, a missed penalty, a goal in off side position (difficult to see from that angle on tv), brave defending (10 men behind the ball from the moment terry was sent off) and ultimately a goal from Torres to finish it off.

Ymmm, they had 10 man in 2nd half ? I Think it's logical to defend

Hopefully Bayern can stuff Madrid tomorrow. And Chelsea in the final. I honestly couldn't care less about today's game, as long as Bayern would go on to beat whoever won it

They defended like that over the 2 games even when they had 11 on the field with occasional break-away's, i.e how they got their goals.

Did you even watch the games?
