Safin never even broke 55% games won for a season and broke 70% matches won only twice, with only one full year in it. His stats are diabolical.
He had injury problems every time he played well. He had had back problems in 2001, had wrist problems in 2003 (withdrew from the AO open before playing Schüttler, who made it to the final that year), and missed most of the year, then after winning in Australia in 2005, he had a knee injury which required surgery later in 2005. He then missed 7 months. He was never the same player after that. He said that he didn’t stop feeling pain until 2008, and after that he only played on your until November 2009. You really need to do some research. Plenty of former top pros like Wilander, Becker, Sampras, McEnroe, stated how good he was. You don’t beat guys like Sampras, Agassi, Federer, Djokovic, Hewitt, Roddick, Ferrer, Moya, Nalbandian, Henman, Coria, etc without being a good player. Wawrinka started peaking at an age where Safin was retired. It’s not a valid comparison.
