Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

The problem for Remco is that he has to drop Kuss, not allow Roglic to win the sprints and prevent Jonas from coming back into the game by giving too much time and on top of it his team is not going to be useful in chasing Jonas. If he was in super form, he could do all of them but i don't think he is and it is going to be a tactical race.

Kuss must be shaking in his boots now with only 1 minute left for Remco to gain back, with tough mountain stages coming up for the rest of this Vuelta!

Remco will show who is boss. No doubt. The almighty is winning this one easily. It has been written.
My impression is that Kuss is one of those guys who, once he’s off the bike, wears flip-flops year-round ;)

This is just such an impossible situation if you aren't in an absolutely monstrous shape. You need to drop Kuss but you don't have the team to do the job and you can't drag Roglic and Vingegaard with you. He has to react to every attack by the Jumbo guys and even if he can keep things controlled good luck winning the sprint for bonus seconds against Roglic.

Honestly I see two ways for him to win this and I don't think either is likely:
Either he has to hope for Vingegaard and Kuss fading so hard that it essentially becomes a duel against Roglic.
Or he has the legs to just ride everyone off his wheel like he sometimes did last Vuelta. But so far Evenepoel hasn't even looked as good as Roglic. To drop him there would have to be a significant performance swing.

I think that is his only chance. He's never won a mountain stage in any manner that suggests he can put time into Kuss unless Sepp gets into some sort of crisis.
He can hold his own and hope to win some more time on Roglic, but how is he gonna drop Sepp?
JV has to support Sepp, he really does have a big lead

Right, how do you gain time on Sepp, although the red jersey either gives him wings or the leadership responsibility becomes a burden, in which case the Tourmalet and Angrilu offers possibilities if you've got the legs.

Remco dropped Kuss on stage 8 and stage 9

Kuss is no worry for Remco

And let us not forget that Kuss enjoys his current position, because he was conceded a breakaway with some 40 riders. That's unusual. Granted he earned it and has show in the TT he's now a viable candidate for final victory. However, to be a designated leader from the start would not have given him a long leash to gain big time. Yet now Remco has to contend with another Jumbo card in a deck already stacked in its favor.

There is a moment in every GT winner’s past when everybody thought they can’t pull it off and they couldn’t- until they could. If this is the moment for Kuss, he will be a late bloomer that’s for sure - but we’ve had examples in the past. Froome, Armstrong (let’s ignore clinic) both came from non GC backgrounds and shocked everyone once they could hold on. Kuss threat is therefore possible but not yet likely I’d say. Even this Vuelta he already shipped 38 seconds to Remco and 23 to Roglic ignoring TTs and stage 6. If he holds his advantage in week 2, his threat will become a real one…

Some are disappointed, but I‘d say Remco did a great, great ITT today. He only lost 16 seconds to Ganna. Remco was 0.5kms/hr slower than Ganna, on average.

The thing is, the course was perfect for both, Ganna and Remco. Remco‘s more aero (smaller), but Ganna has 22kgs more than Remco (83 to 61kgs). Ganna‘s legs both are considerably heavier than Remco‘s. I think Ganna still has a slight advantage. He just has more flesh: big, powerful legs, full of finest, fastest flesh.

I think it was a good day for Remco. He also gained 20seconds on Primoz, so he clearly had a great day.

That's where I disagree as does Remco.

Remco admitted he had crap legs today. Rog did an amazing TT. All that equates to Rog losing a lot less time than expected
