There was hope that he wouldn’t have too many issues from the fall, but unfortunately it did have an impact.

COVID in the Giro really *** up his season. Sure he got LBL and WC ITT, but he also wanted the Giro and Lombardia. In hindsight he shouldn’t have gone to the Vuelta.

The crash was unfortunate and had an impact but Remco was looking strong at the end. The climb hurt him more so maybe his w/kg today wasn't at its best anyway.

Remco could have got second had he and Masnada simply drove the pace in the second group and not insisted upon the leeches working
Not when he was already dropped hard on the climb. He did very well to get a top 10 spot after getting dropped on the climb, but he was never gonna bring back 40s to the main chasing group.

Remco won't change no matter how usually he gets dropped. There's no humility in this guy. He was already fuming in the chase group and looked like he wanted to beat the sh*t out of other riders.
Would have to agree and I think he is void of humility.. But today he got up off the ground, final monument of the year, bleeding and he chased really hard and I think he never thinks he can't win..my friend owns a little Chihuahua dog that thinks he is a lion..he also never gives up..

The front group was shipping time big time by not working, however. A well coordinated chase should have caught them

Jesus. Now is the best time to move to another team with better support (Ineos) and better pay (Ineos) and he decides to stays put🤦🏼‍♂️ He won’t win the big GT’s with this team.
You are correct and his father/manager probably thinks the same but Remco is both a leader and a teamplayer so he likely feels a lot of responsability. I can imagine that the possible evaporarion of his team had an impact on him.

So Remco suddenly is the big „loser“ after these merger rumour weeks:

He stays at SQS. He won‘t get additional, strong helpers. The team wants to shift the focus more back to the Flandrien classics. No long-term future, Bakala quits at end of 2025.

All that is bad. Plus his Tourmalet stage nightmare at recent Vuelta.

At the moment, hardly anything points to Remco as 2024 Tour winner.

I think the move to Ineos would have been the best for him and for cycling.

I see what you mean Skijumper, but why wouldn't he get additional helpers? Landa is coming over, Van Wilder is super strong, Hirt is not bad, plus there are some more talented riders in Quickstep as well. I do agree that Ineos may have been a better fit.

Fast forward 10 years:
Remco's kid: "Dad, why do they call you "The Chihuahua"
Remco: #$#$#$@^#^%

Has the team actually cost Remco anything so far?
Potentially it could have during the Giro, but didn't, Covid struck.
Vuelta, Kuss stage? It's not the mountain goats that would have kept Kuss out of red, and he didn't lose the Vuelta that day either.
Tour 24? With Jumbo and UAE, now Bora too that will want to control, he won't need a train with Thomas, Arensman and Rodriguez.
And the team is not that bad either. Van Wilder is coming along slower than I originally thought, but in the end his Giro was good. Masnada seems to be coming back. Landa in Vuelta form is still good. Vansevenant is developing. There really is no need to change team now, especially if the GT-target 24 is the Tour.

The net effect is more likely aggressive and chaotic attacking. You need a team that has the depth to get Remco back in the final action if he covers the wrong move or gets stuck behind a complacent pack. It's not going to be just one dimensional racing now.

No it isn't. Roglic at Bora already adds a team that is very likely to control/control/control.
Jumbo is not going to play any cards other than Vingegaard. All Remco has to do is follow him. The question here is not the team, it's Remco.
UAE might try with a second card, but well, Remco still has to stick to Vingegaard and if he isn't able keep up with the Boroglic train.

Evenepoel has a remarkable way of getting dropped like a stone, looking like he's completely out of it & then out of nowhere more than limiting his losses.

I mean sure the crash didn't help etc. etc. but it's hardly the first time we've seen him get dropped & then finish quite well. The first time I noticed this was in the 2021 Giro (stage 9 with the dirt/gravel climb finish which Bernal won).

It's just something which has become a bit of a recurring theme with him (especially on bad days).

Being the best rouleur in the world has something to do with it.
