I need to step away from some of the comments online as well. There's way too much "oh this is so sad, RIP, my thoughts are with the family etc.".

It's not "sad", it's horrific. A nightmare. It's sick. I mean what a sh*t end of the year for pro cycling.
We don't know anything about the details of the accident, nor do we know if it was intentional. So these comments seem to be all we can say at this moment.

Well, I don't think it's wrong for someone to look at the facts on the table right now & conclude the f*cker murdered his wife.
Not many facts have been reported, and while it's normal to feel things, it would be advisable to wait like a day or two for confirmation before sharing your anger. Personally I think it's kinda in bad taste to speculate on something like this like 10 minutes after it happened

Also one of the few facts reported is that Dennis has been released on bail which doesn't suggest murder
edit: But I have no idea, murder suspects do get released on bail so

To be fair, the likelihood of this being an accident is higher than anything else, in general. It is very easy to cause serious injuries to a person with a heavy vehicle even at low speed. If this happened close to their house, the likelihood of an accident is even higher as you drive in a familiar area and may do many actions routinely with perhaps not so much alertness to what's around you than elsewhere. I sincerely hope that was the case also here, but man, what a devastating news...

Well, I don't think it's wrong for someone to look at the facts on the table right now & conclude the f*cker murdered his wife. That's where I am. It looks bad. So this does make me angry.

I'm also not totally feeling the disconnect on social media right now from some of his peers (& former teammates) who're posting their own "happy family holiday snaps" this morning on New Year's Eve.

I mean read the room ffs. Melissa was there during the Giro celebrations for Christ's sake. It hits.

FYI
there's no real decent way of responding to such an incident. But people need to accept there's going to be some anger.
I fully agree with the part in bold. If you just left out the other parts, which contradict the part in bold.

Of course.

It's a strange world we live in, i.e. people can get hounded, cancelled & thrown to the online pitchfork mob over mere innuendos & entirely unproven facts (cancel culture essentially), yet when we get an incident like this one, there's a shift in the opposite direction & people start saying "please follow due process & avoid speculation!".

I mean come on now... I know enough.

Charged with "causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care & endangering life".

I'm not going to tiptoe around that one.

i have bolder one section to comment only on this aspect. I think you are being very unfair here as it is quite possible that many of those people were not even aware of these tragic events when they posted and additionally some could have been scheduled posts submitted hours or even days prior to posting.

Car accidents never go for murder charges, and the bar for murder presumbably is very high, so I'm inclined to read more into the fact there was an arrest in the first place than what the charges actually were.

These are crazy times for Rohan‘s team, Jumbo Visma, also.

Decades of Rabofail curse. Finally, they start winning. 2023, they win all GTs in one season. Moments of total triumph.

On their way, crazy things happen: Hessmann gets tested positive. Van Hooydonck retires immediately because of heart disease. Now, Rohan Dennis, hours before the end of his rider contract, is involved in an accident which causes the death of his loved wife.

I think Plugge, Zeeman and other Jumbo staff start growing grey hair, over all these positive and negative dramas.

If you run over someone in your car in the Netherlands you're always arrested, no matter the cause or intent. I assume it's the same in Australia, certainly since their judicial system is a lot stricter.

As I said, I hope he has a good future after retirement and doesn’t get into any trouble.
You were so right…

I hope Rohan and the kids now get all the psychological care they need.

As if there is a curse on Jumbo‘s Giro team of 2023: Chain incident (former ski jumping colleague helps!). Hessmann positive (might come back). Now, by far worst, Dennis‘ accident.

The charges laid are all related to aggressive/careless driving, so suspect that there must be some doubt as to whether the collision was 100% intentional :(

Either way saddening to hear, especially after everything they reportedly worked through in their marriage and that they have 2 young children.

There's no murder charge, is there? It sounds like manslaughter to me.

There's a BIG difference between being reckless and accidentally killing someone, and then intentionally murdering them.
