Maybe Stephens learned too much from Saiz. The ONCE formula was about as likely to make everybody fly as to make everybody collapse at the worst possible moment.

Yeah so as you were all saying...definitely upped his programme...totally dominant....yesterday was just a 'bad day'

How many minutes is Yates in front today? I'm camping in a field, no access to TV.

Imagine thinking in Anno Domini two thousand and eighteen that more aggressive doping programs can't backfire.

Oh of course. Doping is always the answer.. whether things go really well...or really badly. Catch 22.

You've got everything covered. ;)

Yup.

Rider wins - doping.
Rider cracks - doping.
Rider consistently in top ten - doping.
Rider gets stronger over 3 weeks - doping.
Rider gets weaker over 3 weeks - doping.
Riders hangs on in the grupetto all race - must be doping just to keep up.

Nothing has happened since the Festina affair in 98 that would point to anything other than those six statements. Nothing.

You've come in late to this. The suggestion was being made that Yates was "totally dominant" (despite it being obvious he was burying himself to grab a handful of seconds here and there) and that he was smiling up climbs (despite it being clear he was grimacing with exertion) and that this was some sort of new Ricco event and down to extra doping by Yates.

Now he's just lost, what, 20 minutes over one climb.

Apparently this is because his super-extra-doping has "backfired".

Oh, I can never recall proven dopers having bad days on the mountains after climbing exceptional for a good while.

***, I can count 100ish examples from top of my head.

Some people in this thread have never heard of a bad blood bag aka. The Tejay Special.
This was pretty similar to the Basso one in 2005. Dominant at first, then signs of weakness at the end of a stage, then the next day boom getting dropped by his teammates

Catch 22 again.

Meanwhile this thread is falling off the page quicker than Yates fell off the GC.

At least he fell off the GC in a dominant fashion, I'll give you that

Blame reality, not us. Again, plenty of historical examples of exactly what you're so indignant about.

Zulle must be clean in '98 Giro according to that poster, after all he cracked completely just like Yates in the last week.

Except he wasn't very very good. Most of his lead going in to Thursday was made up of time bonuses. He scraped around for them grabbing a few seconds here and a few seconds there.

Compare and contrast with Froome.

Don't make stuff up. Nobody here is claiming he's dope free.
Ok.
But you are being sure that his crack has zilch to do with doping, which baffles me.

You need to go back and read the last few pages.

A time on Zoncolan that was fast enough to match yesterday's megadopers, dropping last years winner at will on every final climb and just riding away from all the other favourites on stage 15 as if they were stopping for coffee.

But apparently Yates hasn't been very, very good.

He was very good in the sense that he seemed to be the strongest rider and was able to either grab time or a bonus on the rest (except Froome on the Zoncolan) on every meaningful stage before this week.

To be that consistently good is not usual.

Basso wasn't really dominant, but indeed, he was the one who came to mind.

Clearly got a slap on the wrist and was told stay in your lane. The supersonic fall of Yates and the thermonuclear *** rise of Froome is uncanny. Hein Verbruggen would be proud.
