Strange profligate behaviour from teams with sprinters to just let a not notably strong break have it. A stage of a pretty big WT race with a sprinters parcours, the bulk of the top sprinters in France, Ewan gone home. It was a rare opportunity. They must all be shattered.

Sagan out of top 10 in every stage. Strange and sad statistic indeed

and van Aert's "Top 10 in every race day of the year" streak is unfortunately over as well

edit: if his race program on PCS is correct, there would have been a realistic chance to extend it till the Dauphiné at least

I don't think you could have expected more from him in this race. The question is whether he will find any form before the Giro.
Exactly what I was just asking, but not towards Giro or Tour, but towards the WCH. That could be a "season saver" from him. One or two wins in Giro/Tour won't be enough for a rider like he is.

I at least expected top 10 today. Bora didnt bother to pull peloton for him speaks for itself.

Obviously there was no reason for them to pull, when they know he couldn't possibly win. Him catching Covid was unlucky and has set him back, but he might bounce back.

I think two wins in Giro/Tour wouldn't be bad for him these days. But we'll se what he can do later on.

Yeah, but unfortunately he's already got a win this season, meaning that he's lost any change at the prestigious Most Top-10s Without a Win race!

How would you design this kind of stage?

Just a lazy mock-up with a gimmicky double (1½) Ventoux ascent to start the stage, but the point was to have Col de Lagarde-d'Apt as penultimate climb, as you get the short circuit trouble with Ventoux instead. The detour with Mur de Monieux adds 10 km, so it's not necessarily a net benefit to include it (without it you can do the 1½ Ventoux as last climbs). A better made stage would come from the east, I think.

It just really has an unfortunate location.

He is 31 and had covid a month ago. Get a grip.

Get a grip on what?

2018 was the last of his peak years and the field has become much stronger with MVDP WVA et al.

Doesn't mean he's still not one of the best riders but sprinters tend to fall off faster than other types of riders.

But he is not a sprinter. Like MvdP and WvA aren't sprinters.
