Nice article on Dumoulin's mental struggles in the past year.

He says he's a much happier person than last year. He really struggled with being famous all of a sudden after his Giro win. So much was happening around him, and he only saw the negative stuff, and being the control freak he is, he started overcompensating by training too much. Credits his gf, now wife, who is a psychologist, with getting him through it.

There's a premium article I don't have access to.

Here's the English version. Hopefully translated correctly. http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tom-dumoulin-i-didnt-become-a-cyclist-for-the-money-and-the-fame/

Hopefully he's got a handle on it now. Sounds like his wife is a great asset/help for him.

Dumoulin doesn't want to do everything right for the Tour and get 3rd cause the route doesn't suit him, and waste a good Giro opportunity.

Then why would he do exactly that by riding the Tour over the Vuelta.

Riding the Tour after the Giro makes absolutely no sense with the explanation that's given.

So I guess it's sponsors.

Also literally says he was gonna do the Tour 100% focus until the route scared him off

Obviously he's now gonna reward the organisers by showing up anyway.

I'm orally defecating in my mouth a little.

Lastly, Oomen to the Tour, no Giro. Kelderman goes to the Giro.

Anyway, full interview will come out on Sunday apparently.

In the same article it says that Kelderman will ride the Giro. Not the strongest possible team, but Kelderman will do (unless he crashes out again).

My guess is that after this year a lot of people think it's suddenly a viable option, and a lot of riders go to the Tour cause sponsor pressure.

Easy way to cut himself some slack and say it's not an attempt at the double when he probably has it in the back of his mind after the two second places last year. At the same time he now realizes how hard it is to do a really good second grand tour. I think he is secretly hoping that Sky have some issues at the Tour which gives him more hope and his TT will be enough to get him on the top step at the Giro. I still think the Giro will be a very competitive race but Dumoulin has showed over the past two seasons that he does enough in the mountains and is much better at riding his own race on the final climbs instead of worrying too much about tactics. The TT is still his strength and knowing how to time his effort for minimal time loss on the MTFs.

I agree that the field is crazy this year in the Giro, but I wouldn't be surprised to see half the big guns end up falling away from a decent GC position and go on to use the Giro as getting some mileage in the legs in preparation for a good shot at the Tour. Dumo gonna go up against the Skyborgs who are totally focused on the Tour so think he has the best chance to go all out and win the Giro and stage hunt in the Tour.

I don't understand this. Sunweb/Dumoulin wants to go all in for the Giro and than they put a far stronger squad on paper for the Tour...plus why on earth would you already name your squad now. There's something like form or injuries.

I guess this list is not official, or is it? It's just speculation, however I think it's close to the truth. The Tour team almost certainly will feature Dumoulin, Kelderman, Oomen, Roche and Matthews.
