I still believe he can win this. I only hope he doesn't have any serious food poisoning or dehydration after today.

Well at least now we know he can tackle these high altitude climbs. The legs are still there so nothings lost yet.

It's incredible really. He was at 1'30 after the *** break. Which means he lost only 45 seconds on Nibali and Quintana in the whole climb and the whole downhill.

It makes me mad. What could he have done otherwise? Now it just cost him a whole lot of energy to even limit the damage.

Yes it was much harder than it should have been. I wonder if Movistar will be much more aggressive tomorrow because of that.

Dumoulin also said he felt "really strong" and said he could "have easily followed Quintana and Nibali". Which is why he is so disappointed.

This happened to Major Tom during last year Tour as well, so it's a bit worrying.
For the record, he won the next stage last year.

If he continues to feel really strong then he's still very much in the race.

he rode pretty fast considering he was alone so it looks like he isn't ill (otherwise he would've lost much much more). also after the stage, he said he would've stayed with them for the whole climb if would've needed "to stop".
obviously he's pissed because he lost big chunk of time. he could still put another 1.5 min on Nairo during the last stage though. no panic.

If he could have easily followed Quintana and Nibali today then he has the race in the bag unless a crash, mechanical etc.

I'm hoping for Dumo to pull another Oropa on one of the remaining stages _O_

and of course he needs to do a great TT

As long as he's not ill, he can still win

Time to show character for Dumoulin. He's still in this.

Also, although I'm not criticising anyone for what they did in response to Dumoulin's nature break, it's time to play hardball for Sunweb now too - don't take a single pull unless Quintana or Nibali attacks, let the breakaway win by half an hour if nobody else wants to chase, who cares? Make the Movis and Bahrain get into the wind if they want.

Maybe I've got the humor of a 3 years old kid. But seriously, I just saw the leader of the Giro stopping at the bottom of the final col to do delicious doo-doo on the curbside. That's just super funny, sorry!

Dumoulin said he's had it before. Suggested his intestines get hypoxic during intense exercise at altitude, causing him to have problems

It's equal parts hilarious and sad, just like Froome on Ventoux last year.

When he had to stop and take a dump last year in the Tour, he ended up winning the next day. If I remember correctly that is.

The positive here is we still have a race.

The negative is what was a bad blow to etiquette. Zakarin, Quintana and Nibali should be ashamed. Better to lose with dignity than win how they did. In that sense Tom is the winner here.

It all depends upon recovery. He has been the strongest in the race all race. How much did he lose today expending so much energy to limit his losses?

If he is ok it is doubtful he loses more than a handful of seconds in stage 18 to 20. It is still his race to lose.

That could well be a problem then for the rest of this week.

It also suggests that other riders shouldn't really be obliged to wait for him. They wouldn't wait for someone whose threshold dropped 30w more than everyone else because of altitude after all.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but I just rewatched and timed him around, maybe a little less than, 1k into the ascent. He was 1:20 behind.

Really a shame for him with this bad luck, but he should have taken that break earlier. He already felt it on the descent.

At least he proved he is of the same level as the other contenders in the high mountains as well. If he has no more incidents he could still very well win. The chances however have decreased from 50/50 to like 10/90 I think..

If it doesn't happen again, he is the most likely winner. One thing is the time loss, much worse is it that both Nibali and Quintana (lol, probably not) now smell blood and are ready to goo all in for the win.
