Taking the Yellow with the incident that happened right in front of him, this should be renamed the coward thread... now I see what Eisel was saying about no respect! I hope they attack the living daylight out of him after the rest day.

Looked to me like they eased up, got the word Flecha and Hoogerland weren't coming back and then pushed on.

Initially, he rode hard after the crash of Hoogerland and Flecha, but did back off for a bit soon after. I was a bit turned off at first, but when they slowed, I chalked the initial reaction to the heat of the moment. He came to his senses. I am not a fan of Voeckler, but he didn't do anything wrong today.

The reality though is that he won the yellow when the peloton turned off the gas after the Vino, VDB2 crash. The break capitalized, and in fairness to them, that is the way things work. To ask them to slow down in the break when there is a crash in the peloton is not really workable or fair. I can see some instance like the WW Giro incident where you might talk to the break, but in today's race, there was no reason for them to slow.

And exactly how do you figure that? Voeckler was out for the jersey today and the proof lay in him conceding the final KOM points to Hoogerland.

How would attacking Flecha and Hoogerland help him in any way, especially after they had already waited once for Hoogerland after his poor descent? Obviously, from replays of tape not shown live, Tommy V. DID slow the remaining three down to see if either Flecha or Hoogerland would get back on. He had a much better chance of putting time in to take the Yellow with 5 riders rather than 3.

Voeckler has been around far too long to not wait for horsepower in a break.

I think Tommy will survive Luz Ardiden in yellow.

One thing's for sure, Tommy V will give it a real good fight before he gives up yellow. The GC guys will have to work to pry it off of him. And it may take a few stages.

BTW, did Tommy V take tongue wagging lessons from Richard Virenque??? Only Tommy makes it look more believable.

Perfect script here....Voeckler defending the maillot jaune and the honour of the republique in the pyrenees on bastille day! we could be looking at a sphincter blow out here as Tommy pushes himself well over the limit :)

Outside of the top contenders the yellow jersey could not have gone to someone more deserving. Tommy will honor the jersey and fight to the bitter end to defend it. What's more is that I honestly believe, just like with Thor, that everyone in the peloton is very happy for him. Way to go Tommy!

Thomas Vockler is a great rider, and fun to watch. Always attacking and the french answer to Jens Voigt. I hope he get many days in yellow, since his days in yellow last time I always follow him, and is happy when he get a good result. I think he can keep it for sometime since he is a pretty good climbe. Probably it will be good for the overall contenders also that Europecar can take responsibility in the peleton for the upcoming stages. Nice to see him on the podium yesterday he was really happy for beeing back in yellow.

You got to be kidding , he did slow down, he kept looking around. Coward? I don't think so. He did well to stay on his bike. It would also seem you should be calling Sanchez and Casar the same thing.

In this addition of the tour his attacking on this stage will be one of the highlights. He was pure aggression, lets see if the tour "contenders" are as hungry as Voeckler for the yellow.

The longer he keeps it the happier i'll be, because he will honour it with the effort to keep it.

Perfect! Make it 'till the end of the Tour? No, three days is all I can do. :D

Ok, we are on. Just FYI, I may be without internets for a couple days as I will be in bella Italia riding around. If I do not change my avatar immediately, I will impose an additional 3 days penalty on myself.

Of course, I will not have to because Tommy will be in yellow after Luz Ardiden. :)

From http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/flecha-the-driver-didnt-even-stop

-Flecha was also critical of new race leader Voeckler’s attitude in the break. Asked how he felt about the French seeming to accelerate following the crash, Flecha replied: “I see that as normal behavior for Voeckler, because he’s always like that in breaks, causing trouble. Just before that, Casar, one of the others in the break, had had a go at him because Voeckler had attacked on a descent after attempting to win the mountains points instead of waiting for those of us who weren’t fighting for them. He was completely focused on the yellow jersey. We all know what he’s like, seeing him act in any other way would have surprised me.”-

sounds like the boys think V is a punk really

Well, today, Voeckler showed that he can be a ******. When he went with that break at the end, he had to know he was dooming them. He was being an ******* just to be an ******* as far as I can see.

Ehm Garmin and HTC couldn't care less about him. They just wanted the stage.

And Voeckler was in that position, why drop then?

Cycling needs people to be different aggressive and not simply willing to confrom with the norm. It would be boring otherwise.

If Gilbert was in yellow today and attacked as he did people would rightly be applauding him for riding aggressively. It makes a change to watching riders hide in the bunch and wait until the final 2/3km of a MTF before showing their powder.

I couldn't give two hoots about whether a breakaway succeeeds on any given day as long as the racing is itself exciting and not formulaic.

Cycling needs more Voecklers/Gilbert/Vino characters who illuminate races and aren't afraid to take a chance.

- The break was already doomed with Gilbert up the road, and I think originally TV was looking for the mountain points and then decided to ride on when there was a nice gap.

you are talking about apples and oranges. do not confuse your entertainment with the quality and dignity of the race and the ethics involved

Voeckler could easily have rolled along in the peloton (or what was left of it) and keep his yellow jersey (it was never in danger anyway). Everybody would be happy.
Instead he chose to gamble (a tiny bit), go with Gilbert & co. and show himself.
It's called panache.
A concept some may not understand.
