Not that odd when you consider that the last time Froome raced a GT before he came 2nd at the Vuelta, he was disqualified for hanging on to a motorbike after being dropped on the first climb of the day on the Aprica stage in 2010.

This is not an answer to the question and you know it. Its just another bashing of Froome.

Weve heard this "Froome was weak" song from you everytime someone has mentioned the name since he finished with the pack on the first selective stage of the race. Regardless of whether people are asking if you are outraged about his performance or not.

It is not that inconceivable that riders who had been weak before can come out and put in super performances.

The other guy in this partnership was a 29 year old pursuit rider when he first showed he is able to climb, and his only other performance of note in a gt was just missing out on the podium in a prologue.

Tommy Voeckler could have won the grandaddy of them all this year.

Most riders show their potential earlier. Some show a little bit of it, some show none at all.

If you want to open up a bash Chris Froome thread at least you could keep all these identical posts there.

You could even add a little bit of humour to it.

Call it "things that could outclimb Chris Froome before August 2011"

There is a certain LA as well

I like Tony and Velits.
Tony has got a pigeonhole/niche to be in. Peter should really try focus on some races like T-A and try peak for the Vuelta where if the field is weak could go well. The fact he has not settled down yet into a real speciality shows his talent. He's good on hills as well.

Tony announced his race schedule till summer.

Same as last year but it seems he skips the ardennes classics.

27.07.-12.08.2012 Olympische Sommerspiele London (GBr)

2012 is a very exciting year for Tony Martin and his fans, what with the Olympic Games and the Tour De France - a Tour with a parcours very much to Tony's liking.

An issue that I see though, is that a) the OG only comes around every 4 years and b) a TDF parcours like this may never come around again to Martin's career.

So the issue specifically is can Martin organise his training to allow himself the best possible chance to win the Olympic time trial gold medal, and ride high up in the overall standings in France? And if not, which goal should he focus on?

The TDF GC is the riskier one. Because when going for GC, even all nicely laid plans can disappear due to the bad luck of a crash, which may not necessarily injury a rider, but could cost him many minutes and his whole race regardless. Bad luck in a one off ITT is less likely.

Going for GC may even result in Martin's TDF ITT's being half a minute slower than what would be the case if he was just riding to be a TT rider in 2012, and that may result in the loss of one or two stages. But I certainly see Martin as a strong top ten chance this year (with a full focus on GC), possibly even top 5. But is it worth it to try for this if it risks him ending up with a bronze medal (as an example) in London instead of gold?

In future years I think that Martin could just leave the Vuelta for his GC GT riding, where the mostly one mountain stages may better suit him to limiting his losses, plus the fact that the standard of the Vuelta is generally down on the TDF and Giro.

At least Tony Martin will bring in the wins for QS :p

Olympic champion + World champion + all Tour time trials + some stage races + Vuelta time trials sounds like a good season.

Ithink he'll go in the Tour with no pressure and jsut sees what happens. If he does well in the first mountains he will try to hang on. If no He'll take it easy and focus on the TT.
The Olympic TT is 9 days after the and of the Tour. Thats not a lot, but it's enough to regain energy and to gain some 2-3 kilos of weight.

Prediction: Tony M. wins various minor stage races with TTs such as Algarve, as last year. Goes to the Tour in good shape, takes yellow after the first long ITT, then loses 5 minutes on the Grand Colombier stage, and more the following day. Spends the 3rd week in the autobus, wins the last long ITT, then wins Olympic Gold at the TT.

That'd be nice. :)

Tony could become only the second rider in history to win olympic gold and finish on the Tour podium in the same year! Only Ullrich did this before!:D:)

so could wiggins, contador, leipheimer, valverde, evans, vino, etc etc etc

Omg, same again :(

I must say Tony Martin's hype is pretty cyclical: it starts with a new season and ends after the first Tour mountain stage

Is Valverde allowed to go to the Olympics? I thought dopers didn't get second chances there. Wouldn't surprise me though, since Lashawn Merrit is all of a sudden allowed to the the Olympics as well

Yes, he's allowed to go.

CAS overturned that rule last October. I believe the IOC can propose an amendment, but that won't affect the 2012 Olympics.
