Tour dream over:(
What  He'll be back racing in 10 days. It's not going to change much for him. He'll miss Romandie though.

Very unlucky, but those thing can happen. Wish him speedy recovery but all looks better than it sounded at the start.

I'm sure with the help of a good doctor he'll be back in no time.

Some further details below, he was only three kilometers from home having completed his ride for the day :/

“I don’t know exactly how the collision with the car transpired yesterday. I can’t remember the accident and was unconscious for about 15 minutes. What I know is that I was going about 35 to 40 km/h on a gently sloping bike path, and a women probably crossed it with her car. Then the lights went out. And when they came back on, I saw above me the heads of policemen who have asked me my name and date of birth and such things.”

“After a night in hospital in Münster, I lie now in Zurich. Here, there are the necessary specialists that can help me to recover. My left side of the face is totally smashed. My left eye is bloodshot and completely swollen shut. My left arm hurts and some ribs have also been affected. Despite all this, I would rather be home. I'm actually doing quite well. My girlfriend is here and is taking care of me. My mother and my brother have come at night from Frankfurt. I'm being well fed.”

Maybe Bavarian enlighten me but Tony don't get the form easily
It's not like tour is 10 days away. He'll easily be able to be there at peak or rather London ;)

he only broke a cheekbone? he can start training as soon as he's out of the hospital
Exactly. He can train on rollers, too. It's only his face which is affected. But not the important body parts he needs for cycling. A broken collar bone would be a lot worse.
This might even be a blessing in the end, as it takes away some pressure off him. people won't excpect too much of him now. This can only be good for him.
He'll be in shape in Liege don't worry guys.

No. He broke a cheekbone, jaw and an eye socket.
Ouch. And no concussion?

(Goalie for my favorite football team recently suffered same injury, but he also got a concussion. Our for at least 6 months, will be forced to wear a mask if ever comes back to play)

Crazy drivers. What are the odds on Omega Pharma QuickStep's two GC contenders get hit by a car within several weeks of each other? A jaw is a different matter. That could be bad unless it's a hairline fracture.

Conspiracy? RNT trying to get rid of the competition slowly but surely? just kidding :)

That sounds horrible and I don't think he will be "all there" in July. He might start and he could even do well in the TT, but he will not have anything to do with the GC. Orbital bone fractures are a significant injury, I don't think he should ride on the road for a couple months until this is healed up imo.

Gute Besserung, Tony.

I hope he's at the TDF, if only to hear Phil and Paul say 'Tony Martin' in English accents. For some reason I find that funny given that's he's German.

:D

he will beat contador in the mountains in 2012
Miraculously, this bold prediction appears to be on the path to becoming a strange sort of reality!

With that said, there ain't no way in hell Martin makes the top 10 in the tour this year, even with this dream course. The crash and following recovery certainly didn't help here either. The simple reality is he'll lose minutes on each of the medium difficulty MTF's... Top 20 would be best case scenario for him in my book.

OPQS update:

Tony Martin returned home today in the late morning, he was diagnosed with several facial fractures, the last medical checks also revealed a small fracture in his left shoulder blade and upper arm.

Because of the nature of the fractures, Tony Martin won't need surgery.

The return of Tony to training will not be immediate and will depend on how his clinical situation evolves.

(more on the linky above)

Well that sounds quiet good.
If the break doesn't exceed two weeks Tony will be ready for le Tour.
