Both Wiggins and Cooke are cyclists, irrespective of gender, and after evaluating their palmares from their respective specialist disciplines there's a very strong argument for both to rank very highly on a top 10 list.

The only way Ak-zaaf's argument can be held up against including Cooke in the British list is to point out that pay and prize money is so abysmal for women cyclists that it's hard to discuss them in a "professional road racing" forum. However it could be argued that working as hard as many of the top women do despite the lack of financial incentives and security only makes their achievements that much more impressive.

Since I have seen some track guys listed here I thought I would throw out Leo Peelen for the Netherlands. A heck of a good points race man, and pretty good time trialist on the road. Heck, pretty good all around.

for the track i think moeskops, schuiten, bos, post, pijnen, groen, derksen, van vliet and schulte should also be considered.
we had a lot of good track riders.

Ireland, small country(4.5million people) not many cyclists but 2 big, big stars

1.Sean Kelly, No explanations needed
2.Stephen Roche, ditto
3.Shay Elliott, stage winner TDF, yellow jersey wearer TDF, team-mate of Anquteil
4.Martin Earley, TDF, Giro stage winner
5.Dan Martin, current pro, will be very big
6.Nicolas Roche, current pro, Top 25 TDF, Irish Champion
7.Mark Scanlon, former Junior World Champion, Tour finisher
8.Philip Deignan, current Pro, 3 GT finishes
9.Paul Kimmage, 3 TDF participations, 1 Giro participation
10.No clear candidate-
Ciaran Power/Laurence Roche, Conor Henry, David O'Loughlin

One rider who didn't get a mention by the Irish contingent - Alan McCormack was one of the leading lights on the American circuit. While it was viewed as the poor relation to the Euro scene back in the 80's it was nonetheless very fast and competitive.

Alan was a real character...his brother Paul did a nice job on the circuit over here as well.

When those guys first came over to the states they did a few east coast races with my team as guest ringers. One of my younger and more impressionable teammates approached Alan and asked what our team plan for the race was and he replied in an irish accent that barely translated to american " ride like fook and try to hang on".

I believe with 9 worlds and olympic medals, Hans Henrik Oerstedshould be on that list. What about Claus Michael Moeller. Moeller was sidelined by danish cycling union, but in several years still brought in fair share of the uci points that allowed denmark certain number of riders at the worlds.

Well being second generation german immigrants, I will do one for Germany. It was harder then i thought to make one up.

1. Erik Zabel
2. Jan Ullrich
3. Marcel Wust
4. Olaf Ludwig
5. Dietrich Thurau
6. Heinz Muller
7. Rudy Altig
8. Jens Voigt
9. Remund Dietzen
10. Andreas Kloden

I perfer more consistent performances, not massive big results. This is why Kloden is just in my top 10, even though he does have 2 2nd place TDF finishes, just doesn't have much substance outside. This also why I put Zabel above Ullrich, but it was a tough decision. 7 podiums in the TDF, Olympic Medal, and a Vuelta win is impressive, but as many of us agree, just seem like he just never came up with hte performances we expected when we first saw him in 1996 rise to prominence. Zabel raced year-round, won just about everything a sprinter could, and competed at the highest level for almost 15 years.

What about Rolf Wolfshol, he should be in the top 3
Hennes Junkermann?

I would say

1. Jan Ullrich
2. Erik Zabel
3. Rolf Wolfshol
4. Rudi Altig
5. Olaf Ludwig
6. Hennes Junkermann
7. Andréas Kloeden
8. Dietrich Thurau
9. Rolf Goelz
10.Jens Voigt

I am certainly not an expert in German cycling, but what about Klaus-Peter Thaler? Maybe he deserves a mention. No idea where to include him though.

From what I know according to my young age :

Bernard Hinault
Jacques Anquetil
Louison Bobet
Raymond Poulidor
Laurent Fignon
Bernard Thévenet
André Darrigade
Laurent Jalabert
Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle
Richard Virenque

And of course a thread called "top cyclists of all time" wouldn't be complete without mentioning Jeannie Longo.

Did I say he tested positive? Raced around him before he "turned pro". He couldn't finish in the same time zone as most of the other names on that list. His progress afterwards was somewhat dramatic, according to many of his teammates.

Yes. Was stretching on the infield at Nat Track champs, heard this deep voice in front of me and looked up. Couldn't get an erection for a month after that.

Ok, if you want to maintain erectile performance than I suggest not looking at the first page of "Babes on Bikes" - as someone has posted a lovely foto of Tammy on the first page ;)

What - page 4 and no Australians yet? Here is my list in no particular order of road cyclists:

Sir Hubert Opperman
Phil Anderson
Robbie McEwen
Stuey O'Grady
Cadel Evans
Baden Cooke
Russell Mockridge
Michael Rogers
Anna Wilson
Oenone Wood

The list would be much longer if track cyclists were to be included!

All worthy candidates but you've missed some that i would have included:
Clyde Sefton
Alan Peiper
Michael Wilson
Steve Hodge
Pat Jonker
Any of these guys deserve a place on a top 10 list.
