Are we looking at the classic GT backload problem? Where by the time they get to these stages the peloton is either tired or baked by the heat and if the right guys go up the road they just ride tempo?

more like the classic us postal problem. One team so much stronger than no one even bothers to try anything.

I think Moviestar should have sat and waited and eventually force Sky/Froome to chase Contador. Valverde and Quintana could then be in a position to make repeated attacks on Froome after he has tired from the chase. That was a good chance for Moviestar to piggyback their tactics of Tinkoff and use Tinkoff's tactics to their own advantage.
I's no good Moviestar trying to take small time gains on the final climb, Quitana still needs over 3mins.
Contador has the right idea of going big to take it on.

If Kwiatkowski abandons the race, but Golas is still in it, has he really abandoned? ;)

It is also the first of 4 tough days in the Alps. Burning all your matches on Day 1 is a risky move. Friday is much better suited to a long range attack.
