Valverde and Contador up ahead means Froome has to chase while Nairo can sit on him. It makes it much more likely for Nairo to take time and Froome + It means that Valverde could win the overall as well.

You lost me when you said Valverde can win the overall. Possible but very unlikely. We'll see what Movistar has in store for later. Your argument makes valid points but I still think that attack would've benefited Contador much more than Movistar.

Quintana doesn't have a chance with a 1 vs 1 duel. He is more than 3 minutes behind.

He has to gain 3 min on Froome whether or not Valverde helps Contador. Bringing another competitor to the front just makes that task more difficult. Assuming their duo attack was allowed to go, it is very easy for me to visualize Contador cracking Valverde on the last climb and moving up to second in the GC. YMMV of course.

Bet you a 100 that in that case Sky just keeps the gap at 4-5 minutes before bringing it down to 3-4 at the finish just to troll Nairo and put Valverde around s.t. as Froome in GC :D

Is Frank actually looking at a possible top 5 at the end of this stage? They will surely pull 5 or so minutes back on the Allos+Pra Loup?
Have they forgot about him?

Are we looking at the classic GT backload problem? Where by the time they get to these stages the peloton is either tired or baked by the heat and if the right guys go up the road they just ride tempo?

Yes
