Yates bros have been saving their energy the last few days, so it's not surprising to see them up there.

Hopefully Valverde cracks trying to help Quintana win to give Nibali third place. GGTG of course....

Domestiques etc have caught up with the Big 4 again. I'm still thinking Froome will be the best up Alpe.

According to the Belgian motor reporter the descent was one of the easiest he's ever seen. So no surprise Froome could easily keep up in the descent. He's a good enough descender that no matter how good others are at descending they need a challenging descent to take any time on him.

Movistar could have scored a massive own goal with expelling of needless energy, on the attack. Valverde was struggling to hold on to Quintana.

Makes me wonder why froome didnt just let quintana and valverde get a minute or so over the top of the climb and save his energy. Was always gonna get back to them on the descent and the flat before alp duez. How could quin and valv possibly stay away?

Quintana goes, gets a good lead, Froome goes, catches Quintana, drops Quintana just before the finish...

useless stage again, because noone want to continue, good attack but totally useless when they let sky regroup

They cant change the parcours ffs.
Are they supposed to ruin themselves on the flat while froome waits for his team and then pulls them in?

If it does, Prudhomme should resign. If there ever was a call for extra security, it would be today.

God I hope not, Guerini was bad enough and he wasn't a GC contender and ended up winning the stage anyway.

*** l' alpe d huez, mountain stages should be designed without flat sections in between.. flat section kills the race. We had the greatest stage in our hands but obvioulsy quintana valverde cant bury themself for 30km in the flat. Nibali for example yesterday stayed 60km on his own because it was up and down until the end. no more flat sections please

Big 4 =/= top 4 in GC
Exactly ;) and neither is it the "4 best climbers in the race"
Contador’s fanboys deluded by their rider. It’s funny to remember their confidence in Utrecht.
Read the posts in the Contador discussion thread before the start of the race. A lot of people made fools of themselves there, not that they're likely to own up to it any time soon.

Before the Tour, the best four was Nibali, Froome, Contador and Quintana. Now the best four are Nibali, Froome, Quintana and Valverde, so they could just as easily be labelled as the "Big 4" as Nibali, Froome, Contador and Quintana could.

That said, the term "Big 4" makes no sense as one rider is a level above the rest.

Alpe d'Huez is always crazy. Today is nothing special.

It would be extremely risky. If froome would have been isolated on this part valverde and quintana could have worked together and suddenly NQ would only have to get about 1 minute on the Alp and thats absolutely possible. Moreover piti is a very good descender.

I'm anything but a Contador fan, but how on earth are people deluded to believe he's still a top 4 GC rider?

The man won the Giro a few months ago, the Vuelta last year and is still the 5th best overall rider in the Tour this year. By no metric is Contador no longer part of the Big 4. The only argument is that maybe for this year Valverde has made it the big 4+1.

Please tell me who has won the last 2 grand yours, and while you're at it when was the last time Valverde stood on the top step of a GT podium. If my memory is right it's only happened once so it should be easy to remember. ;)

It's not a matter of choice, the descent just doesn't really allow it. I dont know if there is a good way to get to l'Alpe d'Huez, but the classical ways have never been good for long range attacks. Especially if there us only one mountain and a ridicoulusly short stage preceding it.
