Groenewegen can't be considered a first tier sprinter really. Wasn't this his first GT-stage?Dekker_Tifosi said:Groenewegen has not been 2nd tier for a while now. Yep, really embarrassing for Greipel, Kristoff and Bouhanni that they couldn't even manage a stage win, from about 11 sprin stages, even with Kittel, Cavendish, Sagan and Demare all leaving the race at various points.Valv.Piti said:The others simply are so bad that a second tier sprinter can open the sprint with 350 metres and win. He barely rode any GT except for the Tour if I'm correct.Valv.Piti said:Groenewegen can't be considered a first tier sprinter really. Yeah and only his 2nd WT stage win. No way he is a first tier sprinter.Valv.Piti said:Groenewegen can't be considered a first tier sprinter really. He's not even close to top tier at the moment. I think that's not only his first GT stage, but only his second every WT stage win. Top tier sprinters rack up 5+ of those a season.Valv.Piti said:Groenewegen can't be considered a first tier sprinter really. If Groenewegen has his chance without Kittel, he is the fastest

Post of the Tour
So has Colbrelli at times, so has Degenkolb, so has EBH, so has Matthews. None of them are top tier sprinters though.Hayabusa said:He's only 24 and this is his second GT... it's all subjective to determine tiers but he's shown he can match the best in other races.
Keram said:Matthews 11th. His bunch sprints were really poor this Tour. Sagan would beat him for a green even with that first relegation with minus 80 points imo.

Groenewegen certainly has the potential, but he's nowhere near the elite level yet. His positioning is way too poor for a start.
And Kittel would have beaten Sagan comfortable. But neither finished the race, and Matthews did as much to animate it as almost anyone else, so it's a fully deserved win in my book.Keram said:Matthews 11th. Some people are never happy. "The sprints are boring with Kittel winning all the time." Kittel crashes out creating open field for other sprinters. "The sprints aren't good enough when Kittel isn't there."Dekker_Tifosi said:Groenewegen has not been 2nd tier for a while now. Haha. No ways.
You are talking about Groenewegen in the same way Valv.Piti talks about Valverde.
He's got huge potential. He's a challenge for the top sprinters. Let's leave it at that.
Well sure, if you include the top 10 riders in any discipline as 'top tier' then he wouldn't be far off getting in. But then if you are putting Bouhanni and Kristoff in the same tier as Kittel and Cavendish, then it's a bit meaningless. Would be like saying that Froome and Meintjes are both top tier GC riders.Hayabusa said:DFA123 said:So has Colbrelli at times, so has Degenkolb, so has EBH, so has Matthews. Again that depends on how you determine tiers which is subjective.
His positioning was perfect today. He muscled Kristoff off his leadout man's wheel, then exploded out of the final corner.DFA123 said:So has Colbrelli at times, so has Degenkolb, so has EBH, so has Matthews. Yes, today it was excellent. Most of the other 10 sprint finishes in this Tour it has been terrible though. And it probably would not have been so good today with another four top quality sprinters and their trains all jostling for position - like there was at the start of he race.Leinster said:His positioning was perfect today.
