You get some unclassified beasts at the Giro she they forget to classify it. 2015 was a great example: a 9km at 5%, and 20km at 4% (with two descents halfway through). Plenty others. Not death 11km at 6.5%, but comparable.

Kittel probably the fave. But team will have half an eye or more on Martin, who looks in super form and is a genuine podium threat.

Matthews? Could pick up a lot of points on harder stages + has full team at his disposal. Demare as well.

Demare IMO. Won't do much worse than Kittel on the pan flat stages and can also score points on tougher stages.

Demare and Kittel joint favourites for me, Matthews just below as I don't think there are enough stages where he can get points and the other two can't.

Pretty sure FDJ are going to throw their full weight behind Demare now. Not sure about QS once they hit the mountains, I think if Martin continues to perform they'll focus on that unless Kittel is in green. Might actually be interesting this year.

That's some 50 GT stage wins combined...

However, a lot of big name sprinters like Steels, Wüst, Koerts, Kirsipuu (of course), O'Grady dropped out earlier. Mario Cipollini crashed just before the Tour and didn't start at all.

Yep, you and LaFlorecita have convinced me that Demare is fave. He's the middle way between Kittel and Matthews terrain wise, in sharp form and I agree, likely to have full support.

You could say the same thing if you take out the top 3 in many sprints throughout cycling history.
That is a solid Top 10.
And, as is pointed out above, many of the greatest cyclists of the time were not racing.

Vainsteins: 1 (giro 1999)
Van Heeswijk: 2 (vuelta 1997, vuelta 2005)
Mori: 0
Piziks: 0
Magnien: 0
Hincapie: 1 (tour 2005*)
Mengin: 1 (tour 1997)

5 in total, I would have guessed 6 or 7, I thought the two Frenchmen had some more between them.
