Jumbo. Arrogance? Stupidity? Clueless? Bernal could have lost minutes today, Mollema said he was shouting at freking Kwiatkowski to slow down. Do they think they are invincible, that they can just ride away whenever they want? Time will tell.
I so hope Pogacar wins.

Actually scrap that.

You know what a fitting end for the current writing is?

By that logic, everyone should wait for the last big mountain ;)

No... it is an elimination process and the race is won by endurance, recovery and consistency. Choosing maybe 2-3 moments to really put pressure on. Maybe with using your team to set a high pace and then attacking if you feeling you have the legs. Someone may be showing weakness and you take advantage of the opportunity given, or by people simply dropping from the group.

Most fall out of contention because they simply have nothing more to give. They just drop like a stone with a small shift of pace in the higher mountains. Because they over time/days have gone into red to stay with the group. The bill adds up to pay and they are out. Way easier way and less dramatic/costly way of separating yourself from your rivals. Until there is one or two left. That you hopefully just have that little bit of edge over, that you choose to put in that attack for come at the end of the race. Where it is quite naturally where it is decided.

1st week most is contempt with still being in contention going into the 2nd week, not to have burnt up too much of yourself or your team. Stayed out of crashes. In the 2nd week is where we see people will fade away from contention and who is going into the 3rd with a chance to win. Then lastly in the 3rd week it is when it is decided who wins and proves to be the strongest. Usually on the last stages. When everybody is at their limit.

It is hard to execute to win a GT. It is more about patience, and making the right decisions, than anything else. Some factors you can affect, some you cant.

It wouldnt been wise or the right decision to attack or put real pressure on today. Flat leading up to the end. Everyone had plenty of help around to pace them. It would have cost more, than the reward. If someone cracked big today, they were never gonna be a problem.

Must have forgotten what it was like racing GTs when Nibali and Quintana ruled.

Well, maybe we don't like it, but it would seem like the team tactic is to do a lot od last km attacks with Roglič. Primož is the best in the world when it comes to 3-4 minute maximum efforts and they will play on that. And they could not do this today. Maybe on Saturday (and then he goes on the downhill after), stage 13 with the last 3 steep kms on Puy Mary, Grand Colombier and Loze.

Precisely.

The effort needed to stay away would have cost more, than the reward is what he is saying.

I wasn't expecting the big guns to go on lengthy solo escapades. But they had nothing to lose from riding a tempo to get rid of a few more of the hangers-on in that group. If they burn a helper or two and 10-15 people come in together? Fine. Not a problem. Instead you got a 50-man group ride as Ineos progressively slowed the tempo.

Again, compare the 2012 Giro, and how Scarponi and Basso were breathing through their noses when Hesjedal was struggling on week 1 mountains, but did nothing to distance him, and then he rode himself into form and when they did try something he was able to respond. People like Higuita, Mas and others were vulnerable today, but they might not be in a week or two's time if they ride themselves into form. Roglič is the strongest now. Just tell Gesink to go ride at 90% on the front for a bit to get rid of some of the chaff. That's all I'm asking for.

The mindset of "wait for the next stage" makes no sense when the decisive climb on the next mountain stage is Peyresourde, the single most used major climb in the Tour, and one that everybody knows like the back of their hand exactly when to attack, when to defend. And that Peyresourde is an easier climb than Lusette so saying you don't want to gain 20 seconds here to lose 10 minutes on Saturday... I mean, when was the last time anybody of relevance lost 10 minutes on freaking Peyresourde? In 2016 there were 15 riders coming in together a few seconds behind Froome. Kuss saying there's no point in trying to gain any time unless a stage finishes on the steepest MTF means we've got a week and a half to wait before Jumbo try anything other than maybe Wout van Aert upsetting the sprinters again. There is no bad place to gain time.

If they make a route so everybody peaks in week 3, everybody will spend two weeks riding around holding each others' hands and you may as well just hold a one week race. You know, like the 2011 Tour or 2019 Giro. If we're really unlucky, they don't even wake up from their stupor then, and we get something like the 2012 Giro. The route this year was intended to make it so riders didn't all just hold station until week 3 and give us a tedious hand-holding festival for the first 2/3 of the race. It seems, however, the riders are intent on making this a one-week race and will stop at nothing to give us one.

For them and for Ineos, riding the stage like they did today makes sense, they are saving energy for the biggest mountain stages.

It does too for FDJ (because all eyes are on Pinot maintaining shape in week 3 instead of burning his matches early), for Bora (Buchmann recovering from an injury) and for Bahrain (hoping to keep Poels in the race for week 3).

But for a number of other teams, it makes no sense to let all of Ineos and Jumbo get "half a rest day", on what could have put them under pressure.

I honestly don't understand why you take offence of what Kuss said.
Because every syllable of it is dripping with a sense that THIS is what racing is supposed to be, that mountain stages only exist to be soft-pedalled unless they're summit finishes, and that racing is something that happens only in specific, selected areas chosen ahead of time. That there is nothing to gain from dropping opponents, so you're justified in not trying. They may as well make 90% of the race untimed "liaison" sections like Paris-Dakar.

This so much. I miss the time when Quintana and Nibali attacked on the Col d'Allos in the stage to Pra Loup and everyone on this forum complained about a lack of action. Seriously, if you think the Tour has always been like this in the Skineos era, take a look back at 2013 and 2015.
Tbf that was stage 17 and this is stage 6. But yes, we do tend to lump all the Sky Tours together when really 2013 and 2015 were far better than 12,16,17,18.

You were 15 in 2013? Well, when you're young you think the future is going to be bright and there will be endless fun... then when you get older you will look back and miss those warm summer childhood days... :p

This péloton would have soft-pedalled the Mortirolo in the 2010 Giro to be fresh for Aprica. Then they'd have soft-pedalled Aprica out of fear of the Gavia the next day. Then they'd have soft-pedalled the Gavia because it was further than 10km from the finish and that's apparently too far.

The 40-man uphill sprint at Tonale would have been the bomb, though.
